Phenotypic and Genotypic Variability and Correlation Study in Soybean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was aimed at exploring the existing variability and Interrelationships between different pairs of agronomically important characters of soybean varieties available at Bangladesh Agricultural University. The study indicated considerable amount of variability for seed weight, pod number, branch number per plant, plant height and 100 seed weight. High heritabilities for all these characters were obtained along with high genetic advance for pod number per plant and plant height. Both phenotypic and genotypic correlation study indicated positive and significant correlation coefficients of seed weight per plant with pod number, branch number and plant height. Similarly pod number showed significant and positive relationship with branch number and plant height and negative relationship with 100 seed weight. Branch number showed negative and significant relation with 100 seed weight.

Objectives:

To estimate the variability of different agronomically important characters of soybean along with the correlation study between different pairs of characters.

Methodology:

The experiment was set up at Bangladesh Agricultural University with 21 varieties of soybean collected through Mennonites Central Committee, during the session 1974-75. The varieties were grown in the field in randomized block design with three replication. The plant spacing was 35x5cm. The fertilizers were applied at the rate of 35 kg. of P₂O₅ and 45 kg. of K₂O per hectare. No nitrogenous fertilizer was applied. The seeds were inoculated with culture medium of rhizobium. At harvest 10 sample plants were randomly taken from each of the plots and data were recorded on the following characters (i) seed weight per plant, (ii) pod number per plant, (iii) branch number per plant, (iv) plant height and (v) 100 seed weight. The data were statistically analysed for variances, means, range, etc. By usign the components of variances from expected men squares, as described by various workers ( Burton and De Vane, 1953; Frakes et al. 1961; killer and Likens, 1955; and Kneebone,1958) genetic parameters for different characters were calculated. The mean squares for error and variety were taken as error and phenotypic variances respectively.

Achievement/Findings:

Both phenotypic and genotypic correlation study indicated positive and significant correlation coefficients of seed weight per plant with pod number, branch number and plant height. Similarly pod number showed significant and positive relationship with branch number and plant height and negative relationship with 100 seed weight. Branch number showed negative and significant relation with 100 seed weight.It was observed from the overall correlation study that the genotypic correlation coefficients value were always higher than these corresponding phenotyic values. This fact was also reported in soybean. The genotypic and phenotypic correlation study in soybean by various workers reported the existence of positive correlation between seed weight per plant with period from flowering to maturity, heavy seeds, resistant to shattering and plant height.
