The main purpose of the study is to measure the livelihood status of the beneficiaries of RDRS under changing living conditions and occupational change. The study was confined to Kaligonj Upazila of Lalmonirhat district, one of the collaborative pilot project areas of RDRS, BRRI, AAI, DAE and BAU. One hundred and twenty beneficiaries were randomly selected from three unions viz., Tusvander, Dologram and Chandrapur. Data were collected by using PM & E (Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation) tools as well as through observations and interactions with cross-sections of the beneficiaries. Four?fifths (84.10 percent) of the beneficiaries fell in the young to middle aged category having primary to secondary level of education have great potentials to uplift their livelihood status.  The majority (89.2%) of the beneficiaries had medium to high agricultural knowledge which helped them for better understanding of the practices conducted through PETRRA. Moderate occupational changes (58.3%) of the beneficiaries have direct impact not only in increasing the beneficiaries’ employment but also to increase diversity of income all round the year that helps to improve the standard of living. The facilities for all items under the study have increased to a considerable extent after joining the PETRRA project and the highest changes (714.16%) have occurred in respect of domestic animals, followed by tin shed room, use of khat and use of quilt.

i) To determine the changes in occupational pattern, knowledge, income and living conditions of the target beneficiaries due to the intervention of the PETRRA project activities.

ii) To identify the areas of skill training of the target beneficiaries and extent of selling those skills for using sustainable improvement and higher income.

iii) To explore the differences of the beneficiaries before and after joining in the PETRRA project in respect of selected parameters.

The study was conducted in Kaligonj Upazila (three unions viz., Tusvander, Dologram and Chandrapur) under Lalmonirhat district. This upazila is situated 30 km north from Lalmonirhat district head quarters.

Population and sampling design: All the RDRS-PETRRA beneficiaries (500) of the Kaligonj upazila constitute the population of the study. The beneficiaries were divided into 25 RDRS-PETRRA beneficiary groups of which only six (6) groups were selected randomly. The list of beneficiaries was prepared with the help of RDRS extension officer and Block Supervisor (DAE) of the concerned area. Out of six selected groups, five groups were of male and one group was of female; each group consisted of 20 beneficiaries. The sample was taken from the population of RDRS-PETRRA beneficiaries. Out of the population twenty four percent of the beneficiaries were selected by using a Table Random Numbers (Kerlinger, 1973).

Variables of the study: Occupational change and changes in living condition of beneficiaries under improving livelihood status were the dependable variable of this study. The  researcher selected nine characteristics of the beneficiaries (age, educational qualification, annual income, time spent in income generating activities, beneficiaries’ satisfaction on the participation of identification, planning and implementation of project activities, beneficiaries knowledge of different demonstrated technologies, problem faced by beneficiaries in executing PETRRA project activities, training experiences and credit availability) as the independent variables.

Collection of data and analysis: An interview schedule was carefully prepared as PM&E (Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation) method as well as through observations and interactions with cross-sections of the beneficiaries. Direct questions, open form questions and different scales were used to obtain reliable information. The questions were arranged systematically and the schedule was prepared in bangla for easy under standing. The interview schedule was pre-tested with 15 male beneficiaries and then final shape was given to the interview schedule with the experience of pre-test. A semi-structured questionnaire was used just of guide and focuses the collection of data in right tract. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected in order to get valid and reliable information from the beneficiaries. Data were collected from the beneficiaries in respect of their involvement in the identification, planning, and implementation of PETRRA project activities, changes in their occupational pattern, income and living conditions. The data collected from the beneficiaries were coded, tabulated and analysed in accordance with the objectives of the study by using SPSS in MS word 98. Descriptive statistical procedures like frequency counts, percentage, mean, standard deviation etc. were used to analyze the observed data.

PETRRA project activities had been in operation in Kaligonj Upazila of Lalmonirhat district in Bangladesh since June 2000. It aims at improving the living conditions of the landless and marginal beneficiaries through increased rice production by using good quality rice seed. Poor people have very little option to change their occupation. RDRS provides credit for different income generating activities including rice seed business. There is no substitute of an individual’s knowledge in changing his occupation for better management of family. The significant relationship between knowledge of the RDRS-PETRRA beneficiaries with their change of occupation conforms this statement. Thus it can be conclude that any attempt made to increase the knowledge level among the beneficiaries by the RDRS authorities would be helpful for the beneficiaries to diversify their occupation for better life. Occupational change of the beneficiaries had significant relationship with their satisfaction with the project planning and implementation of project activities, time spent of the beneficiaries in income generating activities. Thus any arrangement made to make the beneficiaries satisfied on the participation of identification, planning and implementation of project activities would act as change forces among the beneficiaries to work whole-heartedly for their own welfare and development.
