Leaf Characteristics and Shelf Life of Thirteen Betel Leaf Cultivars of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Bhabnapan produced maximum length and breadth of lamina, leaf area and leaf weight in both Rabi and Kharif season. Bangladesh produced the longest and thickest petiole. All the cultivars showed higher value for all the characters studied in Kharif than that in Rabi season. Weight loss of betel leaves due to transpiration and respiration were the highest in Sanchipan (33.09%) and the lowest in Chherfulipan (23.85%) during normal storage. Phytophthora parasitica var. piperina and Colletotrichum capsici caused leaf rot and leaf root spot diseases, respectively during storage. The incidence of diseases was the highest in Mithapan (63.85%) and the lowest in Zhalpan (46.40%) after 10 days of storage.

Objectives:

To determine the leaf characteristics and shelf life of thirteen betel leaf cultivars of Bangladesh

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Rahmatpur, Barisal during 1992-94. In this experiment, there were thirteen betel leaf cultivars viz. Banglapan from Rajshahi, Bawlapan from Mymensingh, Bhabnapan from Jessore, Bholapan from Bhola, Chaltagotapan, Chherfulipan, Gachpan and Mohanolipan from Barisal, Mithapan and Zhalpan from Narail, Rangpuripan from Rangpur, Sanchipan from Nababgonj and Zyloopan from Bagerhat. Cuttings were taken from six months old betel vines and were planted on raised beds in double row system. Each bed was 2.5m long, 30cm wide and 15cm high. Adjacent beds were separated by 50cm wide drain. The cuttings were planted at 10cm apart within the rows in June, 1992. The experiment was laid out in RCB design and were replicated for three times. There was no application of manures and fertilizers before planting. Data on leaf and petiole rainy characteristics were recorded from 30 leaves collected at random from each unit plot. Data were analyzed using the standard statistical procedures.
