The Effect of Chemical Fertilizers on the Yield Performance of Soybean Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Soybean genotypes show diverse physiological responses to chemical fertilizers to evaluate the effects of different levels of chemical fertilizers (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur and boron) on the yield of some selected soybean (Glycine max) genotypes (BARI Soybean 6, BD 2329, BD 2331 and BD 2340). In the present experiment we investigated yield performance of soybean genotypes under different fertilizer doses in the field. After a preliminary study with four soybean genotypes, one genotype (BD 2329) showed considerable better result than others. Besides this, the results also indicated that the number of pods, seeds per pod, 100-seed weight and seed yield were high with recommended doses of fertilizers. The maximum number of pods per plant (47.8), maximum number of seeds per pod (2.63) and the highest 100-seed weight (26.6 g) were recorded in T₂ fertilizer treatment in the genotypes BD 2340 and BD 2329, respectively. The genotype BD 2329 produced the highest seed yield (2.15 t ha^-1) in T₂ treatment followed by BARI Soybean 6 (2.08 t ha^-1) in T₃treatment.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effects of different levels of chemical fertilizers (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur and boron) on the yield of some selected soybean (Glycine max) genotypes (BARI Soybean 6, BD 2329, BD 2331 and BD 2340).

Methodology:

A field experiment was carried out with four soybean genotypes at the Field Research Site of Bangabandhu Sheikh MujiburRahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Gazipur from February 2013 to June 2013. There were two factors in the experiment namely fertilizer application level and genotype. Four doses of NPKSB Fertilizers are: i) T₀ = no fertilizer, ii) T₁ = 50% of BARC recommended fertilizer dose i.e., 13.8, 18.37, 29.88, 9.35, 0.52 kg NPKSB fertilizer ha^-1, iii) T₂ =100% of BARC recommended fertilizer dose i.e., 27.6, 36.96, 59.76, 18.72, 1.05 kg NPKSB fertilizer ha^-1, iv) T₃ = 150% of BARC recommended dose, i.e., 41.4, 55.33, 89.64, 28.08, 1.57 kg NPKSB fertilizer ha^-1. Four Genotypes are: G₁ = BARI Soybean 6, G₂= BD 2329, G₃= BD 2331 and G₄=BD 2340. The experiment was laid out in a two-factor Randomized Complete Block Design having three replications. The fertilizers were applied as basal dose at final land preparation in the form of urea, Triple Super Phosphate (TSP), Muriate of Potash (MP), gypsum and Boric acid as described in the treatment following the fertilizer recommendation guide of Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council in all plots. Seeds were sown with a spacing of 30cm X 5cm in the line with a seeding depth of 3. Plant sample was digested in Kjeldahl digestion flask with salicylic sulfuric acid and digestion catalyst. Total P, K and B were determined by nitric-perchloric acid digestion method. Available Sulfur was determined turbidimetrically as barium sulfate. The pods plant¹ from the 10 selected, the seeds from 100 selected pods, 100-seeds were counted and then the average number of seeds per pod was calculated.Seed yield was recorded on the basis of total harvested seeds plot^-1 and was expressed in terms of yield (t ha^-1). Seed yield was adjusted to 12% moisture content. The collected data were compiled and analyzed statistically using the analysis of variance (ANOVA) with the help of a computer package program MSTAT and the mean differences were adjusted by Least Significance Difference (LSD) test at a significance level of 0.05.

Achievement/Findings:

From the study it can be inferred that the genotype BD 2340 produced the maximum number of pods per plant (47.8) inT₂treatment. Though the effect of fertilizer level was not significant the maximum number of seeds per pod (2.63) was recorded in the genotype BD 2329 in T₂treatment. The highest 100-seed weight (26.6 g) was recorded also in the genotype BD 2329 in T₂ fertilizer treatment followed by BARI Soybean 6 (25.85 g). All the yield contributing characters were found maximum inT₂treatment and minimum in T₀ fertilizer treatment. BD 2329 gave the highest seed yield (2.18 t ha^-1) inT₂treatment followed by BARI Soybean 6 (2.08 t ha^-1) inT₃treatment and lowest seed yield was recorded in BD 2331(1.8t ha^-1) followed by BD 2340 in T₀ fertilizer treatment. In this experiment, it was also found that BARI Soybean 6 showed increasing growth and yield with the increase in fertilizer doses. And the genotype BD 2329 was more compatible with the recommended dose of fertilizers.
