Path Coefficient Analyses of Curd Weight and Maturity Time in Cauliflower

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Curd weight in cauliflower was positively associated with leaf number, days to curd initiation and days to curd maturity. Days to curd maturity had positive correlation with leaf number, maximum leaf length and days to curd initiation. Days to curd initiation had the highest positive direct contribution to curd weight which was followed by leaf number curd depth and maximum leaf breadth. The direct effect of days to curd initiation on days to curd maturity was also high.

Objectives:

To identify some horticultural traits which have direct and indirect effects on curd weight and maturity time using path coefficient analysis.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in the horticulture farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University during the 1987-88 growing season. There were eight commercially grown varieties of cauliflower. Four of the varieties were indigenous and the remaining four were imported from Japan, Netherlands and United Kingdom. Seeds were sown in open seedbed on 8 October 1987 and the seedlings were transplanted on 6 November 1987. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with three replications. There were 15 plants in each plot. Seedlings were spaced at 50 cm x 50 cm with a peripheral guard row. The crop was fertilizer with 250 kg urea, 150 kg TSP and 175 kg MP. IN addition cowdung and mustard oil cake were applied at the rate of 10 ton and 400 kg per hectare, respectively. Weeding, irrigation and intercultural operation were done as and when necessary. Data were recorded on leaf number, maximum leaf length, maximum leaf breadth, days to curd initiation days to curd depth and curd weight from ten randomly selected plants of each plot. Maximum leaf length and leaf breadth were taken from the largest leaf retained in each sample plant. The days to curd initiation and curd maturity were taken from the date of sowing. Curd initiation was determined visually by regular observation. The weight of curd was taken after trimming off all the leaves and stem up to the bottom of first curd branch. Mean values were used for computing genotype and phenotypic correlations. Path coefficient analyses involving eight variable models each for curd weight and days to curd maturity were compute.
