Effect of Paclobutrazol and Alar on the Growth and Fruiting of Mango

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effects of foliar application of paclobutrazol (1000 ppm) and alar (1500 ppm) were studied on 4-year-old Mango Research Station, Nawabgonj. Both the chemicals reduced shoot and internodal length but did not affect the size of leaf. Flowering time was enhanced by about two weeks in the paclobutrazol treated shoots and also significantly increased the percentage of flowering than control. Alar adversely affected the flowering of shoots. Final fruit retention per panicle at harvest was significantly higher in the treated treatments over control. Final fruit weight and thickness, percent edible portion and quality of fruits remain unchanged. However, total soluble solid content was significantly higher in the treated fruits. Application of paclobutrazol in the month of October or both October and November gave better result.

Objectives:

To control vegetative growth and flowering of mango trees cv. Lakhanbhog

Methodology:

Four years old grafted mango trees of cv. Lakhanbhog with a uniform canopy size and planted 6m × 8m apart in the orchard of Mango Research Station, Nawabgonj were used in this experiment. The study was conducted during the period from September, 1993 to August, 1994 and was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Paclobutrazol and alar at a concentration of 1000 ppm and 1500 ppm, respectively were sprayed to drip by hand sprayer on the first week of October, November and also on both the months. Randomly selected fifty shoots prior to application were marked on each tree in order to record the time and percent flowering. Similarly, newly emerged twenty vegetative shoots and flowering panicles were marked on each tree to record the data on mean shoot length, fruit set and fruit retention per panicle. Leaf area was estimated. Data on physico-chemical characteristics of fruits were also recorded.
