A Study on the Marketing of Bananas by Intermediaries in Some Selected Areas of NARSingdi District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was undertaken to identify the intermediaries involved and to assess the costs and margins of marketing bananas at various marketing stages. the intermediaries identified in banana marketing were Pharia, Paiker, aratdar and retailers. Total marketing costs per 100 bananas for Pharias, Paikers, Aratdars and retailers were: Tk. 8.30,12.30, 17.75 and 17.90, respectively. Spoilage and damage was the major cost-item. Marketing margins for Pharias, Paikers, and retailers were Tk. 20.68, 25.32 and 39.02 respectively per 100 bananas. Marketing margin was highest for the retailers. The findings of the study suggest that the efficiency of banana marketing by intermediaries can be increased by reducing the extent of spoilage and damages of bananas in the marketing process.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in the district of Narsingdi because bananas are commercially produced in different villages of this district. in all six villages-three from plolsh, two from Belabo and one from shibpur upazila were purposively selected for large volume of banana production and lad for their proximity to the primary markets. For the convenience of data collection and comparative analysis, six villages were grouped in to three separate study areas namely, Kalirhat, Velnagar and Belabo primary markets. The selected villages were Majerchar and Parulia under Kalirhat primary market, Gazaria andKararchar under Velnagar primary market and Belabo and Birbhag ber under Belabo primary market. From each study area 25 banana farmers were selected for the study. In the study area, private trading was the only marketing system of bananas. The intermediaries involved in the banana marketing system were Pharias, Raikers. Aratders and retailers who operated in three different types of markets namely, primary market (Kalirhat, Velnagar andBlabo area), secondary market (Narsingdi railway station and Narsingdi market) and terminal market ( Tejgaon railway market and Badamtali). A total of 85 intermediaries-17 Pharias, 40 Paiders, 3 Araters and 25 retailers operating in the three primary market areas were selected for the present study. Data through a pre tested interview schedule during the month of October, 1987 by three trained investigators. the data so collected were scrutinesed, edited, tabulated and analyzed to achieve the objective of the study.
