Soybean genotypes show diverse physiological responses to chemical fertilizers to evaluate the effects of different levels of chemical fertilizers (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur and boron) on growth and nutrient content of some selected soybean (Glycine max) genotypes (BARI Soybean 6, BD 2329, BD 2331 and BD 2340). In this experiment, physiological traits of soybean genotypes under different fertilizer doses in the field was investigated. A preliminary study with four soybean genotypes, one genotype (BARI Soybean 6)showed considerable better result than others. Besides this, the results also indicated that high dose of fertilizers had remarkable effect on plant height, number of leaves, dry weights of leaf, stem and petiole. Based on the findings, it was found that 100% of BARC recommended fertilizer proved to be most appropriate doses of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur and boron fertilizers for obtaining high yield in the soybean genotype BD 2329.

To evaluate the effects of different levels of chemical fertilizers (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur and boron) on growth and nutrient content of some selected soybean (Glycine max) genotypes (BARI Soybean 6, BD 2329, BD 2331 and BD 2340).

A field experiment was carried out with four soybean genotypes at the Field Research Site of Bangabandhu Sheikh MujiburRahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Gazipur from February 2013 to June 2013. There were two factors in the experiment namely fertilizer application level and genotype. Four doses of NPKSB Fertilizers are: i) T0 = no fertilizer, ii) T1 = 50% of BARC recommended fertilizer dose i.e., 13.8, 18.37, 29.88, 9.35, 0.52 kg NPKSB fertilizer ha-1, iii) T2 =100% of BARC recommended fertilizer dose i.e., 27.6, 36.96, 59.76, 18.72, 1.05 kg NPKSB fertilizer ha-1, iv) T3 = 150% of BARC recommended dose i.e., 41.4, 55.33, 89.64, 28.08, 1.57 kg NPKSB fertilizer ha-1. Four Genotypes are: G1 = BARI Soybean 6, G2 = BD 2329, G3= BD 2331 and G4 =BD 2340.The experiment was laid out in a two-factor Randomized Complete Block Design having three replications. Each replication had 16 unit plots to which the treatment combinations were assigned randomly. The unit plot size was 2.52 m2 (2.1m ×1.2 m). The blocks and unit plots were separated by 1.0 m and 0.50 m, respectively. The fertilizers were applied as basal dose at final land preparation in the form of urea, Triple Super Phosphate (TSP), Muriate of Potash (MP), gypsum and Boric acid as described in the treatment following the fertilizer recommendation guide of Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council (BARC, 2005) in all plots. 2/3 of total urea and all other fertilizers were applied as basal by broadcasting and mixed thoroughly with soil. The rest 1/3 of urea was applied after 30 days of emergence (DAE). Seeds were sown with a spacing of 30 cm X 5cm in the line with a seeding depth of 3 cm on February 05, 2013 and the seeds were covered with the pulverized soil just after sowing and gently pressed with hands. The field was irrigated after sowing to supply sufficient moisture needed for quick germination. At the time when 80% of the pods turned brown color, the crop was considered to attain maturity. The crop was harvested at 90 DAS from a prefixed 1.0 m2. Before harvesting ten plants were selected randomly from each plot and were uprooted for data recording. Plant sample was digested in Kjeldahl digestion flask with salicylic sulfuric acid and digestion catalyst. Total P, K and B were determined by nitric-perchloric acid digestion method. Available Sulfur was determined turbidimetrically as barium sulfate. The collected data were compiled and analyzed statistically using the analysis of variance (ANOVA) with the help of a computer package program MSTAT and the mean differences were adjusted by Least Significance Difference (LSD) test at a significance level of 0.05.

From the experiment it can be inferred that the chemical fertilizer dose lower than FRG, BARC (50% less) decreased the plant height, number of leaves per plant, number of branches per plant, dry matter accumulation and nutrient content in soybean genotypes. The chemical fertilizer dose higher than the FRG recommendation (150%) enhanced vegetative growth and dry matter accumulation in vegetative organs of soybean. Chemical fertilizer dose (T2) i.e. 27.6, 36.96, 59.76, 18.72 and 1.05 kg NPKSB ha-1 was found to be adequate for growth.
