The experiment was carried out from November 1999 to June 2001 at the HRC, BARI, Gazipur to study the response of of Honey Queen pineapple at different nitrogen level under rainfed and irrigated conditions. The maximum number of plants (97% flowered when they were irrigated at 30 days interval during dry period and fertilized with 16g N/plant and the lowest (67%) in the control. The fruit weight (480g) and the fruit yield/ha (15.48t) were the higher with the shortest irrigation interval and highest nitrogen application.  The plants which were irrigated at 30 days interval produced the highest yield of 14.52 tons per hectare and the lowest (6.31 t/ha) under rainfed condition. TSS was increase in contrast  acidity  was decrease gradually with the decreasing frequency of irrigation. Fruit yield increased and TSS decreased gradually with the increasing levels of nitrogen. The highest fruit yield (16.64 t/ha) was recorded in plants irrigated at 30 days interval and received 24g N per plant and the lowest (5.82 t/ha) in control plots. Total soluble solids was the highest (17.67%) in fruits produced in control plots. The higher yield per unit area was accounted for by the bigger and heavier fruits in plants receiving higher moisture and nitrogen.

To determine the response of different levels of nitrogen under rainfed and irrigated conditions on growth, yield and quality of Honey Queen variety of pineapple.

The experiment was carried out at the Horticulture Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur during November 1999 to July 200]. Shoot suckers of Honey Queen pineapple were planted in the first week of January 2000. The experiment was laid out in split plot design. Intervals of irrigation, such as 11 (irrigation at 30 days interval), 12 (irrigation at 60 days interval), 13 (irrigation at 90 days interval) and 10 (no irrigation) were in the main plots and levels of nitrogen, such as N0 (control), N1 (g/pl ant), N2 (l6g/plant) and N3 (24 g/plant) were in sub-plots which constituted 16 treatments in the following way: I1N0, I1N1, I1N2, I1N3, I2N0, I2N1, I2N2, I2N3, I3N0, I3N1, I3N2, I3N3, I0N0, I0N1, I0N2 and I0N3. The treatments were replicated three times. The unit plot consisted of two beds of size 6 m x 1 m accommodating 60 plants in double row system. The plants were spaced 40 cm in rows and 50 cm between rows. The main plots were separated from one another by raised 'ail' followed by deep drain to prevent from leaching or running off of irrigation water from one plot to another. Flood irrigation was given as per treatment schedule during dry periods i.e. from September to April. Cowdung, TSP and gypsum at standard dose of 300 g, 6 g P205 and 2 g S/plant, respectively, were applied during bed preparation. Urea for N at respective dose along with normal dose of muriate of potash (l8g K20/plant) were applied in April and September 2000 and April 2001 in three equal installments. Before application of manures and fertilizers, the soil samples of the experimental field were analyzed and found to be slightly acidic (pH 5.95) having low organic matter (1.36%). The chemical composition was nitrogen 0.11 %, phosphorus 18.5 µg/g, potassium 0.22 me/100 g, sulphur 33.17 µg/g, boron 0.13 µg/g and zinc 1.77 µg/g. Data on vegetative growth, such as plant height, plant spread and number of leaves were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants of each treatment at flowering stage. All the plants were taken into account to record flowering percentage. Fruit characters were noted from 10 randomly selected fruits of each treatment. Total soluble solids (TSS) and acid content of fruits under different treatments were also estimated following Ranganna (1979). Data were analyzed statistically following Gomez and Gomez (1984).

Based on the findings of this experiment, it is concluded that for better production of good quality Honey Queen Pineapple, the plants need to be irrigated at 30 days interval during dry period and fertilized with 16 g N per plant.
