Variability and Yield Stability of Some Promising Potato Germplasms

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study with nine advanced genotypes of potato at five locations during 1990-91 showed significant variation for the parameters under study. Variation for location was significant for foliage coverage, plant height and tuber yield. Munshiganj was the best and Bogra was the poorest in overall performance of the genotypes. The other locations, such as, Joydebpur, Jamalpur and Jessore exhibited statistically similar results with respect to different characters. The highest yield (38.1 t/ha) was produced by the genotype 87.364 at Munshiganj, while the lowest yield was recorded by 87.494 at Bogra (11.5 t/ha). The stability parameters showed that the four genotypes (87.364,86,457,87,573 and 87.410) had low ð²d values and their regression coefficients (bi) were near to the unity. Out of these, 87.346 had produced the highest mean yield (28.6 t/ha) and exhibited regression co-effecient near to the unity (0.95) as well as the lowest deviation value (-0.46) indicating that the genotype was highly stable and predictable.

Objectives:

To study the response of potato germplasms to environment and yield stability over the locations.

Methodology:

The experiment was done at five locatins, namely, Joydebpur, Jamalpur, Jessore, Bogra and Munshiganj with 9 advanced genotypes along with the standard variety Cardinal as check. These materials were screened from two batches of 4000 single - tuber-hybrids received from CIP during 1985-86 and 1986-87. Plantings were done in-between the 15th and 20th November 1990 in 3m x 3m plots comprising 50 plants at 60 cm x 30 cm spacing and replicated thrice in RCB design.
