Performance of Two Exotic Typica Coconut Cultivars as Compared with a Local One

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A performance trial of Malaysian, Sri-Lanka and local Typica coconut cultivars was initiated at Rahmatput Coconut Research Station in 1962. For this purpose, 2770 Malaysian seedlings and 722 Sri-Lanka seedlings were planted in June, 1962 and 799 seedlings of the local cultivar were planted in August, 1964 in different blocks at distances of 26" x 26" feet. The Malaysian palms were found to be thicker and taller and to bear longer leaves than both Sri-Lanka and local palms. Sri-Lanka palms bore maximum number of leaves among the three varieties. The average number of fruits per plant in a year was highest in Malaysian palms being 31 as against 24 in both Sri-Lanka and local palms. Although the kernel was thinner and oil percentage in copra was comparatively less in Malaysian nuts but due to fruits of bigger size, the total oil content per nut was almost equal to Sri-Lanka nut, but higher than that of local nut. Average oil percentage in copra of Malaysian, Sri-Lanka and local nuts were found to be 52.60 and 56 respectively.

Objectives:

To compare the performance of two exotic coconut cultivars belonging Typica variety and local Typica coconut cultivars

Methodology:

The seed coconuts of Malaysian and Sri-Lanka cultivars were placed in the seed bed in June 1961. Later on, the seed-nuts of a local standard cultivar also of the same Typica variety were placed in the seed-bed in June 1963. Two thousand seven hundred and seventy selected Malaysian seedlings and 725 Sri-lanka seedlings were planted in June, 1962 and 799 seedlings of the local cultivar were planted in August, 1964 at distances of 36' x 26' feet in different blocks of uniform land at Rahmatpur Coconut Research Station. After planting, necessary cultural operation, like weeding and application of fertilizers at the usual dosage were done regularly to the selected plants. Fifty plants from each of four blocks assigned for every cultivar were taken at random and data on growth, flowering, female flowers and fruit setting were recorded from them. Bunches were properly labelled to get data on such information. Mature nuts were collected from different varieties and information of fruit characteristics obtained from 150 uniformly dry nuts in three lots of each variety, Kernel was also obtained from those nuts and dried in the sun. Well-dried copra was crushed in 'Ghani'. Thus the copra and oil content were found out. Insect pests and diseases in the plantation were carefully observed and recorded. No pesticide was, however, applied as Prophylactic measure.
