Effect of Growth Regulators on Flowering and Fruiting in Pineapple Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at the Horticulture Research Centre, Joydebpur during November 1999 to July 20001 to find out the effect of growth regulators on flowering and fruiting in pineapple varieties. All the varieties (Ghorasal, Giant Kew and Honey Queen) were found equally responsive to different concentrations of ethrel (100 and 250 ppm) and CaC₂ (0.5 and 1%). Percent plants flowered due to the application of growth regulators differed due to varieties. It was 45.73, 77.60 and 73.07% in the case of the varieties Ghorasal, Giant Kew and Honey Queen, respectively. Application of growth regulators might help assure regular supply of pineapple fruits of desired size for export market. Fruit size and quality of all the three varieties were significantly influenced by growth regulators. Honey Queen fruits (350-400 g) having 16.7% TSS and attractive yellow colour were considered suitable for export. 250 ppm ethrel may be recommended to get regular supply of fruits of this variety for export market

Objectives:

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Horticulture Research Centre, Joydebpur during November 1999 to July 2001. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with varieties of pineapple in the main plot and doses of growth regulators in the sub-plots. Ghorasal, Giant Kew and Honey Queen varieties pineapple were included in this study while doses of growth regulators were ethrel 100 ppm and 250 ppm, and CaC₂ 0.5 and 1.0%. Thus there were 15 treatments including control. The treatments were replicated three times. The unit plot consisted of a single bed of 6m x 1 m size accommodating 30 plants in double row system. Stem suckers were planted in the last week of November 1999. The size of suckers was 300 ± 50, 400 ± 50, 200 ± 50g for the varieties Ghorasal, Giant Kew and Honey Queen, respectively. Cultural management were the same in all the experimental plots. Ethrel, CaC₂ @ 0.5 and 1.0% and water for the control plots were applied on 11 January 2001 when the plants were one year old. Fifty milliliter of diluted growth regulators at respective concentration and water for control plots were poured into the heart of each plant at early morning between 7 to 8 am. Data on vegetative characters of plants were recorded before application of growth regulators from 10 randomly selected plants of all the plots. However, all the plants were counted for flowering and in calculating percent plants flowered. Weight of fruits was recorded by a top pan balance without crown and the peduncle. All the harvested fruits were weighed individually. However, weight of 10 randomly selected fruits from each plot was recorded separately to find out mean fruit weight. Weight of crowns was also recorded separately. Length and diameter of fruits were measured by a Vernier Scale. Yield of fruits of al the plots were recorded individually and expressed in tons per hectare. The mean fruit weight was multiplied by expected number of plants per hectare and percent of plants fruited, then divided by 100 to calculate the yield per hectare (Janick, 1972). TSS of fruit was measured by hand Refractometer and acid content of it was determined by titration method following Ranganna (1979). The data were analyzed statistically following Gomez and Gomez (1982).

Achievement/Findings:

It is concluded that fruits of Honey Queen variety were found to have most satisfactory size and quality for export. Fruits of this cultivar are small in size (350-400 g), having attractive yellow colour, very sweet (TSS 16.71 %) and crispy in taste. Eathrel (250 ppm) is recommended to get regular supply of fruits of the varieties for export market.
