Performance of Rambutan Germplasm Under Bangladesh Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Performance of a rambutan germplasm collected from Malaysia and planted in 2001 at Horticulture Research Centre (HRC) nursery, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur was studied during period of 2006-07 and 2007-08. The plant produced 95 and 160 fruits in 2007 and 2008, respectively. The average fruit, stone, rind and pulp weight was 45.80, 2.8, 20.1 and 22.8 g in the year 2007 and 45.5, 3.0, 18.8 and 21.6 g in the year 2008, respectively. Edible portion of fruit was 50.0% and 47.5 % in 2007 and 2008, respectively. The pulp of fruit contained 19.4 % Total Soluble Solids (TSS) in the year 2007 and 19.0 % TSS in the year 2008 and possessed sweet flavour and excellent taste.

Objectives:

To evaluating the performance in respect of yield and quality of fruits of the collected Ranbutan germplasm

Methodology:

A Rambutan plant was collected from Malaysia and planted at HRC nursery BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur in 2001. The plant was fertilized each year with cow dung (15 kg), urea (200 g), TSP (200 g) and MP (100 g) in two installments one is before onset of rainy season and another is after rainy season. Intercultural operations such as weeding, spading, loosing of soil, irrigation and plant protection measures were done as and when required. Irrigation was given as needed in dry seasons. Light pruning was done only to improve the form of the tree and strengthen it. Rambutan tree was sheltered from strong winds with the help of bamboo which do much damage during the flowering and fruiting periods. Individual plant was covered with nylon net to protect the fruit from bird and flying fox attack. Data on different growth and yield parameters, leaf characteristics, flowering and fruiting, yield and quality, insect and disease incidence were recorded as per "Descriptors for Rambutan" published by International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGR) in 2003 with the help of measuring tape, digital balance, refrectometer and using organoleptic tests and analyzing statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

The findings of the present study will help selecting rambutan varieties for fresh consumption and variety development programmes. Considering the overall plant and yield, leaf, flowering and fruiting characteristics of the studied germplasm NL-Joy 001, was found to be suitable under Bangladesh condition in respect of fruit weight, edible portion, TSS, taste of fruit and fruit yield.
