Comparative Yield Trial of Imported and Local Hybrids of Maize

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present study assessed genotype × environment interaction and stability for grain yield, days to silking, plant height and days to maturity with 19 maize hybrids across five different locations of Bangladesh. The AMMI model (additive main effects and multiplicative interaction) was used to assess the additive and multiplicative effects of the interaction. Significant variation for genotypes (G), environment (E) and G×E interaction were observed for the yield. The environment Gazipur, Jessore and Hathazari are poor; but Rahmatpur and Rangpur are rich for hybrid maize production. Considering the mean, bi and S²di; all the hybrids showed different response of adaptability under different environmental conditions. Among these hybrids Pinacle, 900M Gold and 981 exhibited higher grain yield than the better check variety BHM 7; bi~1 and S²di~0 indicated that four hybrids viz. Pinacle, 900M Gold, 981 andChakramarka are stable across the environment. Considering the yield potentiality and stability parameter four hybrids(Pinacle,900 M Gold,981 and Chackramarka) were found promising across locations.

Objectives:

The present study was undertaken to assess genotype × environment interaction and the stability of the imported and BARI released hybrid varieties.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at five locations viz.Gazipur, Rahmatpur, Jessore, Hathazari and Rangpur during rabi 2010-11. The materials consisted of six hybrids imported by different seed companies, nine varieties from Monsanto seed co. ( 7001K, 827K, 717K,7074, 962, 981,900Mgold, 900M, Pinacle ), one BRAC variety (Uttaran-2) and three BARI developed hybrids viz. BARI Hybrid Maize 5 (BHM-5), BARI Hybrid Maize7 (BHM-7) and BARI Hybrid Maize 11 (BHM-11) were evaluated in this trial. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with 3 replications. Seeds of each entry were sown in 2 rows, 5 m long plot at 75 and 20 cm spacing. Seeds were sown on December, 2010. One healthy seedling per hill was kept after thinning. Fertilizers were applied @ 250, 120, 120, 40 and 5 kg/ha of N, P₂O₅, K₂O, S and Zn, respectively. Standard agronomic practices were followed. All the data were analyzed using Cropstat 6.1 program.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering the yield potentiality, stability and other parameters (husk cover and stalk lodging) four hybrids Pinicle (13.45 t/ha), 900M gold (13.37 t/ha), 981 (13.02 t/ha) and Chakramarka (11.18 t/ha) were found promising across locations and may be used in field level for future cultivation.
