Collection and Maintenance of Barley Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genetic diversity of 30 barley genotypes were estimated by using Mahalanobis D² statistics for nine characters.Maximum variation was found in grain yield per plot, grain yield per plant, 1000 grain weight and number of grains per spike. The genotypes were grouped into five clusters. The inter-cluster distances were larger than intra-cluster distances, suggesting wider genetic diversity among the genotypes of different groups. Based on medium and high inter-cluster distances, per se performances and desirable characters eleven genotypes viz. G1, G3, G6, G7, G8, G10, G11, G12, G16, G26, and G29 were selected for future hybridization program. Crossing between these genotypes have the chance to obtain higher heterosis with high performing crosses.

Objectives:

The present study was therefore undertaken to analyze the genetic divergence of barley genotypes to identify genotype for crossing.

Methodology:

Thirty barley genotypes were grown in a RCBD design with two replications during rabi 2010-11. Seeds were sown on 19 December 2010. The plot size was 2 rows of 5 m long for each line. Row to row distance was 25 cm and seeds were sown continuously. Fertilizers were applied at per recommended doses. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Genetic diversity was estimated using Mahalanabis generalized distance (D²) extended by Rao (1952). Tocher’s method was followed to determine the group constellation. Canonical variate analysis was also performed as per Rao (1964) to confirm the results of cluster D² analysis. The data were analyzed using GENSTAT 5.0 software program.

Based on medium and high inter-cluster distances, per se performances and desirable traits, the barley genotypes G8 (IEBONL-74/10), G15 (Ibon-mra L-56/10) and G22 (BB-4) from cluster I; G10 (IBYT-HI L-19/10) from cluster II; G6 (IBON-HIL-17/10), G11 (IBYT-HI L-39/10)from cluster III; G3 (IBON-MRA L-2/10), G7 (IEBON L-63/10), G12 (IBYT-MRA L-18/10) from cluster IV and G1 (BB-1) from cluster V were selected for future hybridization program.
