Evaluation of Inbred Lines by Line X Tester Method (set-i)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Line x tester analysis was conducted in maize involving 12 lines and 3 testers for grain yield, days to tasseling, days to silking, plant height, ear height, number of grains per row, number of rows per cob, cob length, cob diameter and 100-kernel weight to determine the general combining ability and specific combining ability effects. The highest significant standard heterosis (38.56%) for grain yield was observed in the cross IPB 911-31 X Barnali and heterosis ranges from -2.65 to 38.56%. Line IPB911-22 showed significant gca effects for grain yield. The proportional contribution of lines to total variance was higher than testers in all the characters. Good specific crosses showed significant sca effects and were mainly evolved from high x low general combiner parents revealed additive x dominance type gene action. Ten crosses showed highly significant positive sca effect for grain yield could be utilized for further evaluation. The information on the nature of gene action with respective variety and characters might be used depending on the breeding objectives.

Objectives:

The present study involving a line x tester analysis aimed to determine the heterosis, general combining ability (gca) and specific combining ability (sca) of 15 parents and 36 crosses for different traits.

Methodology:

Twelve inbred lines (as female parents) and 3 testers (as male parents) of maize were selected and crossed in line x tester fashion to generate 36 cross combinations in rabi 2003-2004 at Joydebpur. The parents were locally developed advanced stage inbred lines. Seeds of all the parents, their F₁ hybrids and one check variety BHM 3 were sown on 12 December 2004 following RCBD with 3 replications at BARI, Joydebpur. The unit plot size was 5.0 x 0.75m. Spacing adopted was 75 x 20 cm between rows and hills, respectively. One healthy seedling per hill was kept after proper thinning. Fertilizers were applied @ 250, 120, 120, 40 and 5 kg/ha of N, P₂0_5,K₂0, S and Zn respectively. Standard agronomic practices were followed and plant protection measures were taken when required. Data on days to 50% tasseling (DT) and silking (DS) were recorded on whole plot basis. Ten randomly selected plants were used for recording observations on plant height (PH), ear height (EH), no. of grains per row (GR), no. of rows per cob (NR), cob length (CL), cob diameter (CD) and 100-seed weight (HSW). All the plants in a row were considered for plot yield and converted to t/ha. The estimates of combining ability and the variance were made as suggested by Kempthorne (1957).

From the study line IPB 911-22 and tester Barnali and E-32 could be extensively used in hybrid breeding programm. For early and dwarf variety specific line and testers could be utilized. Crosses with significant sca effects could be used for further evaluation. For grain yield, ten crosses exhibited significant positive sca effects ( IPB 911-2 X E-32 , IPB 911-4 X Barnali, IPB 911-12 X Barnali, IPB 911-1 6X BM-7, IPB 911-18 X Barnali, IPB 911-36X Barnali, IPB 911-36 X E-32, IPB 911 -39 X BM -7, IPB 911-39 X E-32, IPB 911 -47 X BM -7).
