Study of Combining Ability of Locally Developed Maize Hybrids (set I)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Combining ability effects were estimated for grain yield and some important agronomic characters of maize in a 7 x 7 diallel analysis excluding reciprocals. Plant height and ear height were highly significant indicated the presence at additive as well as non-additive gene effects for controlling the traits. Parent P₆ was found as good combiner for grain yield and parent P₇ both for earliness and dwarf plant type. The range at heterosis expressed by different crosses was from - 22.64 to 127.39 for grain yield.

Objectives:

The present study involving a 7 x 7 diallel cross aimed to determine the better general combining parents and for isolating good cross combinations in maize for evolving suitable hybrid(s) locally.

Methodology:

Seven inbred lines of maize viz. P₁, P₂, P₃, P₄, P₅, P₆ and P₇ were crossed in all possible combinations (excluding reciprocals) in the rabi season of 2003-04 at BARI, Gazipur. During rabi 2004-05, the 21 F₁^’s and along with their seven parents were grown following Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications on 1st December, 2004. Each plot comprised of 2 rows 5.0 m long. Spacing adopted was 75 x 25 cm between rows and hills, respectively. One healthy seedling per hill was kept after proper thinning. Fertilizers were applied @ 250, 120, 120, 40 and 5 Kg/ha of N₁_,P₂O₅, K₂O, S and Zn respectively. Standard agronomic practices were followed and plant protection measures were taken when required. Data on days to 50% tasseling and silking were recorded on whole plot basis. Ten randomly selected plants were used for recording observations on plant and ear height. General and specific combining ability variances were estimated according to Griffing’s (1956) Method II Model I.

Achievement/Findings:

Parents with good positive gca for yield (P₆), negative gca for days to silking (P₇), plant height (P₆ & P₇) and ear height (P₁, P₅ & P₇) may be extensively used in hybridization program as a donor. The better performing four crosses (P₁ x P₆, P₂ x P₃, P₃ x P₆ and P₆ x P₇) can be utilized for developing high yielding hybrid varieties as well as for exploiting hybrid vigor.
