Jute Pulping Today

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The neutral sulphite anthraquinone jute pulp is mixed with soda bagasse, kraft bamboo, or kraft Albizia falcataria wood pulp in different proportions, ranging from zero to 100 per cent. The freeness of individual pulps for blending is 330 ml (CSF). Pulp blends are evaluated to apprise us of how the jute pulp behaves in mixtures with conventional pulps. The experimental data are fitted in regression equations. The resistance to tear in the blend can be predicted by weighing the properties of respective blend components. Tensile index shows no general pattern. It indicates a synergistic behavior in the mixture with jute-bagasse pulps, lower values than those calculated in jute-bamboo pulps. The property is independent of the proportions of components in jute A. falcataria pulps. The bursting index is either higher or additive of component properties, depending on the respective blend. Apparent density behaves linearly or yields lower values than those expected theoretically.

Objectives:

To study how NS-AQ jute pulps behaves on strength properties.

Methodology:

Air-dried jute cutting from white B jute (Corchorus capsularis), which is not normally used in jute mills, was used for making the NS-AQ pulp. It was heavily contaminated with un retted scales. The bottom part of jute shows poor retting. As such, it finds little use in jute mills, and is rejected as jute cutting. Un retted scales were allowed to remain in the raw material, because it is not possible to remove them with the present day technology. The jute cutting was chopped manually to 3-5 cm. lengths. NS-AQ pulping was conducted, using an AQ dose of 0.1 per cent on oven-dry jute, Muli bamboo and Albizia falcataria (a hardwood) pulps were made by the kraft process and bagasse by the soda process. After cooking, the cooked material was thoroughly washed and disintegrated. Screening was done on a flat vibrating screen with 0.38 mm slots. The pulp was then, dewatered on pressing and well mixed. The yield and the kappa ;number of the pulp were determined subsequently. Cooking conditions and properties of jute, bamboo, A falcataria wood and bagasse pulping are given in the text. The pulp was beaten in a Valley beater machine at different freeness values. Jute pulp was mixed with bamboo, bagasse, or wood pulp in different proportions. The freeness of the component pulps was 330 ml (CSF). This freeness was chosen because most pulps showed maximum tensile strength near this freeness value. Handsheets were, then, made with a target grammage of 60 g/m². They were conditioned at 23 ±1⁰ C and 50 ±1 per cent RH, and tested according to SCAN standard for the determination of strength properties.

Achievement/Findings:

AQ was found to be an effective pulping additive. Addition of anthraquinone results in increasing pulp yield and delignification rate, reducing the cooking time and /or alkali requirement, improving the viscosity and the quality of pulp in soda process. An addition of AQ by 0.05% was sufficient to bring the benefits.
