User Opinion on the Performance of BRRI Rice Wheat Thresher

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was undertaken to evaluate the user opinion on the performance of BRRI rice-wheat thresher. The farmers overwhelmingly recognized the benefits of thresher for the benefits of thresher for the threshing of rice and wheat. Farmers can get return on their investment in one-season of operation. ownership of thresher machine was followed increasing trend in the successive years. The custom hire service has made significant margins to cover the cost of thresher and able to invest further to crop production and non-farm activities. Rental charge of the machine varied according to the demand and weather condition as well as type of crop to be threshed. The introduction of thresher not only bring economic benefit to the user and owner, it also generated employment opportunity for the local manufacturer trader and operator. continuous feeding to the thresher created fatigue of bearing operator. Breakage of blower fan, decaying of spike and breakage of bearing were found most troublesome parts during operation. Farmers faced great difficulty to move thresher from one place to another place due to heavy weight. Safety measures should be taken to prevent severe accident.

Objectives:

To identify the potential application of thresher;
To analyze the farmer's reactions about the field performance of the thresher and
To identify the parts failure/breakdown frequency during operation.

Methodology:

A purposive sampling plan was followed for the selection of the study area and simple random sampling was followed to collect data from 114 thresher owning farmers in the districts of Thakurgaon, Dinajpur, Bogra and Rajshahi. A list of thresher buyers in the study area was collected from the BRRI enlisted farm machinery manufacturing industry. This study was undertaken during June to August, 2003. An interview schedule was developed and pre-tested before administration. Data and relevant information were collected through personal interviews of the farmers. The data were analyzed in terms of frequencies and percentage of various parameters of the study.

Achievement/Findings:

Satisfactory field performance of BRRI rice-wheat thresher influenced the farmer to disseminate the technology in the rural community. BRRI thresher was found profitable machine if it was used on custom hire system. Rental charge of the machine varied according the demand and weather condition as well as type of crop to be threshed (paddy and wheat). Utility of the machine was found 20-25 days in wheat season and 15-20 days in rice season. Mechanical faults i.e. breakdown of machine parts greatly affected the farmers to run the machines at full swing. One labour could feed without fatigue up to 2-2½ hr of operation. About 3-4 persons were needed to operate thresher successfully. Breakage of blower fan and decaying of spikes were found most troublesome parts. Operators should be trained on the operation and maintenance of thresher to prevent accidental damage.
