Effect of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potash on the Growth and Flower Production of Tuberose Cv. Single

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted with four levels of nitrogen (0, 200, 400 and 600kg/), three levels of phosphorus (0, 150, 300kg/ha as P₂O₅) and three levels of potash(0, 150, 300kg/ha as K₂O) to investigate their effects on growth and flower production of tuberose cv. single at the Horticulture Farm, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Nitrogen, phosphorus and potash alone or in combination significantly influenced the flower production of tuberose. The higher number of spikes of tuberose was obtained with the application of 600kg nitrogen per hectare. In case of phosphorus the highest number of spikes per hectare was obtained with application of 300kg phosphorus per hectare. The highest number of spikes per hectare was obtained with the application of 300kg potash per hectare. There was significant interaction of nitrogen × phosphorus, nitrogen × potash, phosphorus × potash and nitrogen × phosphorus × potash on the production of spikes of tuberose. The maximum yield of spikes/ha (753330) was obtained in the treatment combination of 600kg nitrogen, 300kg phosphorus and 300kg potash per hectare.

Objectives:

To investigate the effects of different doses of NPK on growth and yield of tuberose cv. single under the soil and climatic conditions of Mymensingh

Methodology:

An experiment with tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa L.) cv. single was conducted at the Horticulture Farm, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from April, 1991 to June, 1992. The treatments tested were all possible combinations of nitrogen at 0, 200, 400 and 600kg/; phosphorus (P₂O₅) at 0, 150, 300kg/ha and potash(K₂O) at 0, 150, 300 kg/ha. Urea, triple superphosphote and muriate of potash were used as the sources of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash, respectively. The three-factors experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The total dose of phosphorus was applied during final land preparation. The total dose of nitrogen and potash was applied in three equal installments at 45, 120 and 180 days after planting of bulbs. The unit plot size was 2.0m × 1.0m. Uniform bulbs were planted on 25 May, 1991 at a spacing of 20cm× 20cm. The plots were irrigated immediately after planting the bulbs. The border of the plots were lined up with bricks to control the movement of nutrient from one plot to another. Intercultural operations such as weeding, irrigation, drainage etc. were done as and when needed. The soil of the experimental plot was sandy loam in texture with pH 6.6 and contained 0.074% nitrogen, 16ppm phosphorus and 0.26meq/100g of exchangeable potash. Observations on different yield contributing characters and yield of spike were taken and data were analyzed using MSTAT statistical computer package programme. Treatment means were compared using LSD test at 5% probability.
