An Improyed Bicycle with Modified Driving Sprocket and Pedaling Lever

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This paper presents partial modification of a bicycle commonly used in Bangladesh. The main theme of this work was to provide an improved bicycle model as efficient, faster and comfortable transport. This study was conducted with a modification of driving sprocket and a pedal lever. The effect of this modified bicycle was compared with commonly used bicycle. The experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh in October 2003 with five different sizes of sprockets and pedaling levers. A sprocket of 240.00 mm diameter and a pedal lever of 228.60 mm are recommended because of increased forward speed and less pedaling force, compared to commonly used bicycle.

Objectives:

1. To increase the speed of a bicycle through increasing the size of the driving sprocket.

2. To reduce the drudgery of the bicycle operator through increasing length of the pedal lever.

Methodology:

This section deals with the methods and procedures followed in conducting the study of modification of bicycle on the basis of various sizes of sprocket and pedal lever. The diameter of modified sprocket was calculated. The sprockets under study were made of mild steel of 6.4 mm thickness and was prepared by a milling machine. The different sizes of pedal levers (203.20 mm, 215.90 mm and 228.60 mm, respectively) were constructed also. The pedal levers were attached to sprockets by making hole in the center of sprocket and then welded with it.

Measuring instrument for pedaling force

In absence of a pedaling force measuring instrument a simple instrument was constructed and calibrated. It consists of four springs, four guided rods, a base plate and a top plate. The overall dimension of the device is 152.40 mm. x 81.28 mm. x 88.90 mm. It was calibrated with standard known weights against a scale fitted in one side of the device. It was tightly fixed with right side of the foot pedal of the bicycle.

Achievement/Findings:

The modified bicycle with sprocket diameter of 2400 mm and pedal level length of 228.6 mm was found better that the conventional one with respect to speed and ease of operation. The manufacturer should seriously consider this study result for further improvement of the bicycle as no additional cost of manufacturing the bicycle will be needed. It would save time and energy of the bicycle operator.
