Seed Production of Onion as Influenced by Different Planting Dates and Production Methods

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An attempt was made to produce onion seeds following three planting dates viz. 1, 15 and 30 November and using three seed production methods viz. direct seed sowing, bulb planting and seedling transplanting. Seeds were obtained from all production methods when planted on 1 November and from bulb planting method in all planting dates. In the first planting, among different planting methods, bulb method gave the highest seed yield (837kg/ha) and was found to be the quickest method of seed production. Seeds obtained from this method also showed the highest germination (84%). Early bulb planting required longer period for seed production. But gave higher yield than late plantings. Plants raised from direct seed sowing and seedling transplanting methods in the second planting produced seeds, but were damaged due to rain and wind few days before harvest and those in the third planting could not produce any flowering stalk.

Objectives:

To carry out a comparative study of three different seed production methods under three different planting dates for onion seed production.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Farm and the Horticulture Department laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during October, 1994 to June 1995. Onion seed, bulbs and seedlings(cv. Taherpuri) were planted on three different dates viz. 1, 15 and 30 November following three production methods viz. direct seed sowing, bulb planting and seedling transplanting to observe their effect on seed production. The experiment consisting of nine treatment combinations was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The land was well prepared by power tiller and fertilized with well decomposed cowdung, urea, triple superphosphate and muriate of potash at the rate of 10t, 200kg, 125kg and 180kg per hectare respectively. The size of each unit plot was 1.25m × 0.9m. Thirty plants were accommodated in each plot at a spacing of 25cm × 15cm. For direct seed sowing method, seeds were sown in each plot in 5 lines each 25cm apart and after 15 days of emergence, seedlings were thinned out keeping 6 plants each about 15cm apart in each line. In case of bulb planting, mother bulbs were planted. For seedling transplanting method, seeds were first sown in seed bed at each planting date as per schedule and the seedlings were transplanted in the main plots after 40 days, Weeding, mulching, irrigation and staking were provided as and whenever required. Ten plants were randomly selected in each plot to record data on seed yield and other yield contributing characters. The materials were kept at ambient temperature in the laboratory of the Horticulture Department and data on germination were recorded after 5 days and calculated in percentage. Data were statistically analyzed and means were seperated by DMRT, where possible.

Achievement/Findings:

The present study revealed that bulb method is the best for onion seed production, which can be practiced on a wide range of planting time. However, earlier planting will lead to higher seed yield and better seed quality. Direct seed sowing and seedling transplanting methods can only be followed for seed production when early seed sowing on or before 1 November is possible.
