Studies on Boron for Potential Yield Achievement in Groundnut

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out to study the effect of different levels of boron (B) on growth and yield of groundnut. Results showed that total dry mass (TDM), number of flowers and percent pods to opened flowers (Reproductive efficiency, RE) increased with increasing B level till 2.5 kg/ha followed by a decline indicating application of B @ > 2.5 kg B/ha might have a toxic effect for plant growth and development. The highest TDM (14.02 g/plant), number of opened flowers (44.07/plant) and RE (46.53%) was recorded in 2.5 kg/ha and the lowest was recorded in 3.5 kg B/ha except RE. The lowest RE was observed in control plant (25.15%) indicating B has tremendous effect on percent pod setting in groundnut. For yield attributes and yield, results showed that number of pods, single pod weight and pod yield increased with increasing levels of boron application till 2.5 kg B/ha followed by a decline. The highest number of pods/plant (20.67), single pod weight (832 mg) and pod weight/plant (17.09 g) was observed in 2.5 kg B/ha application followed by 2.0 kg/ha. In contrast, 3.5 kg/ha boron application showed the lowest number of pods (8.60) and pod yield (6.94 g). BINA china badam1 produced the highest number of pods (15.92/plant) which resulted the highest pod yield (12.81 g/plant). Control produced the lowest number of pods, pod size and pod yield. Both absolute boron deficient and luxurious condition, grey colour in the leaf edges was observed and the plants became stunted.

Objectives:

To study the effect of different levels of boron (B) on deficiency/toxicity symptoms and its impact on yield of three groundnut cultivars.

Methodology:

An experiment was carried out to study the effect of different levels of boron (B) on deficiency/toxicity symptoms and its impact on yield of three groundnut cultivars viz., BINA chinabadam1, BINA chinabadam2 and BINA chinabadam3 during November 2006 to April 2007. Plants were grown in sand using nutrient solution in the pots. Nutrient solution was weekly applied on the pots. The experiment comprised six levels of boron viz., 0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5 kg/ha. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design with four replications. The collected data were analyzed statistically.
