Growth and Development of Barley as Affected by Irrigation Frequency

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of irrigation frequency on morpho-physiological characters, yield and yield attributes in two barley cultivars. The treatment comprised of four irrigation levels viz. no irrigation, one irrigation at 25 DAS (early tillering stage), two irrigations both at 25 and 50 DAS (early tillering and booting stage) and three irrigations at 25, 50 and 75 DAS (early tillering, booting and grain filling stage) and two barley cultivars namely BARI barley 5 and BARI barley 6. Results indicated that plant height, leaf area, total dry matter, leaf area index, crop growth rate, relative growth rate, number of effective tillers plant^-1, spike length, filled spikelets spike^-1, grains plant^-1, 1000-grain weight and grain yield increased with increasing number of irrigations and three irrigations showed the highest grain yield due to superior growth performances and yield attributes followed by two irrigations with same statistical rank indicating two and three irrigations may be better irrigation schedule for increased grain yield of barley in Old Himalayan Pigmond zone of Bangladesh.

Objectives:

To determine the effect of irrigation frequency and time of irrigation on growth and development of barley varieties like BARI barley 5 and BARI barley 6.
To know the effect of irrigation frequency on yield and yield related traits in barley.
To find out irrigation scheduling to achieve higher yield of barley.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the field laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from November 2005 to February 2006. Two cultivars namely BARI barley 5 and BARI barley 6 were included in the present study to assess their performance on morpho-physiological, yield and yield attributes under four irrigation levels. The irrigation levels were: no irrigation, one irrigation at 25 DAS (early tillering stage), two irrigations both at 25 and 50 DAS (earley tillering and booting stage) and three irrigations at 25, 50 and 75 DAS (early tillering, booting and grain filling stage). The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The data for growth analysis was collected at 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90 days after sowing. Plant to plant and row to row distance were maintained at 4-6 cm and 20 cm, respectively. The dose of fertilizers was: urea 200, TSP 200 and MP 200 kg ha-1 (BARC, 1997). To study ontogenetic growth characteristics, a total of nine harvests were made and at final harvest, data were collected on some morpho-physiological characteristics, yield attributes and yield. The first crop sampling was done at 20 DAS and continued at an interval of 10 days up to 100 DAS. From each plot five plants were randomly selected and uprooted for collecting necessary parameters. The plants were separated into leaves, stems and spikes and the corresponding dry weight were recorded after oven drying at 80 ± 2⁰C for 72 hours. The leaf area of each sample was measured by an automatic leaf area meter (Model: CI 202, USA). The growth analyses like LAI, CGR, RGR and NAR were carried out following the formulae of Hunt (1978). The collected data were analyzed statistically and the means were adjusted by DMRT at 5% level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

Irrigation has positive effect on growth, yield attributes and yield of barley; and Three irrigations at tillering, booting and grain filling stages are best suited for obtaining maximum grain yield of barley.
