Morphological and Yield Characterization of Some Exotic Tomato Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was carried out with 10 exotic tomato genotypes along with two local check with a view to compare their morpho-physiological characters and yield performance. The name of mutants were: CLN 2777 (E), CLN 2777 (F), CLN 2777 (G), CLN 2777 (H), CLN 2460, CLN 2498, CLN 2764, CLN 2768, CLN 2413 (A) and CLN 2413 (B). CLN 2764 produced the highest number of branches/plant. CLN 2498, CLN 2777 (E) and CLN 2777 (F) produced higher number of flower clusters/plant and also showed higher fruit yield. In contrast, CLN 2413 (A) and CLN 2413 (B) produced lower number of branches, leaves, effective flower clusters/plant and also matured earlier. The genotypes, CLN 2777 (G), CLN 2777 (H) and CLN 2777 (E) had produced larger fruit size with higher fruit yield (range 1.83-1.94 kg/plant) than the others. In contrast, CLN 2413 (A) and CLN 2413 (B) showed lower fruit yield due to production of fewer number of fruits and smaller fruit size. CLN 2498 has nipple like appendix at the tip of a fruit which is distinct identifying characters of the genotypes. Six exotic genotypes viz., CLN 2777 (E), CLN 2777 (F), CLN 2777 (G), CLN 2777 (H), CLN 2498 and CLN 2764 were out yielded the local check, Binatomato-4 and Binatomato-5 with attractive fruit shape and size. So, these six genotypes need further study.

Objectives:

To study variability in morphological characters and yield attributes in tomato genotypes.

Methodology:

A field experiment was carried out at BINA farm, Mymensingh with 10 exotic tomato genotypes along with two local check, Binatomato-4 and Binatomato-5 during November 2008 to March 2009 with a view to compare their morpho-physiological characters and yield performance. The name of mutants were: CLN 2777 (E), CLN 2777 (F), CLN 2777 (G), CLN 2777 (H), CLN 2460, CLN 2498, CLN 2764, CLN 2768, CLN 2413 (A) and CLN 2413 (B). The experiment was set in a randomised complete block design with three replications. The genotypes were grown in lines of 10 m long having the spacing of 50 cm between both rows and plants. Recommended cultural practices were followed for normal plant growth and development. Staking was done with bamboo stick at 30 DAT. Urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MP), gypsum and cowdung were applied at the rate of 280, 250, 180, 80 and 10000 kg ha-1, respectively (BARC, 2005). At harvest, yield components and fruit yield was recorded. Harvesting was done at different dates depending on fruit ripening. The collected data were analyzed statistically.

Among 10 studied genotypes, only one genotype, CLN 2498 has nipple like appendix at the tip of a fruit which is distinct identifying characters of the genotypes that help in keeping purity of the variety.
