Characterization and Evaluation of Mungbean Mutants Based on Morphological and Yield Attributes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiments were conducted during Kharif-I season with six mungbean mutants (MB 13, MB 14, MB 17, MB 35, N3J-305 and E4I-915) along with four check varieties (Binamung-5, Binamung-6, Binamung-7 and Binamung-8) to investigate morphological characters, yield attributes and seed yield. Results showed that four mutants/cultivars were taller (range 45.4-49.3 cm) while three mutants/cultivar were shorter (range 36.2-36.8 cm). Bold seeded genotypes produced fewer pods/plants than the small and medium seeded ones. Six genotypes out of ten produced higher seed yield/plant with being the highest in MB 35 (5.51 g) due to the production of higher number of pods/plant. The harvest index was the highest in MB 13 (38.2%) followed by MB 14 (35.1%) and Binamung-6 (35.9%). The lowest harvest index was recorded in N3J-305 (19.4%). In case of mean seed yield/hectare over locations, result showed that Binamung-8 produced the highest seed yield (2040 kg/ha) followed by MB-13, MB-14, MB-17 and Binamung-7 with same statistical rank. Four genotypes, MB-13, MB-14, MB-17 and Binamung-6 matured earlier, within 60-63 days while MB-35, N3J-305 and Binamung-7 took 75 days. However, only two genotypes, MB-14 and Binamung-8 had consistent higher seed yield over locations but MB-14 matured seven days earlier than Binamung-7.

Objectives:

To investigate morphological characters, yield attributes and seed yield in six mungbean mutants along with four mungbean varieties.

Methodology:

The experiments were conducted during Kharif-I season of 2011 at two locations viz., BINA sub-stations, Magura and Rangpur with six mungbean mutants (MB 13, MB 14, MB 17, MB 35, N3J-305 and E4I-915) along with four check varieties (Binamung-5, Binamung-6, Binamung-7 and Binamung-8). The experiments were laid out following a randomized complete block design with three replications having a unit plot size of 3 m × 2.0 m. Row to row and plant to plant distances were 30 cm and 10 cm, respectively. Urea , triple superphosphate and muriate of potash were applied at the rate of 40, 120 and 80 kg/ha, respectively at the time of final land preparation. Proper cultural practices were followed as and when necessary. Data on morphological and yield attributes were recorded at harvest from 10 randomly selected plants in each plot and seed yield was taken from the whole plot and converted into kg/ha.

Achievement/Findings:

The mutant MB-14 performed good in seed yield with matured seven days earlier than the check variety Binamung-7.
