Study on the Effect of Different Methods of Pollination on Fruit Setting in Pointed Gourd (trichosanthes Dioica Roxb.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out at the lnstitute of Postgraduate Studies in Agriculture (IPSA) farm, Salna, Gazipur, Bangladesh on fruit-setting in pointed gourd under open-pollination, hand-pollination and non-pollinated conditions during the period from March 1o July 1995 . Fruit setting was the highest (98%) in hand pollinated flowers, while it was 64.5% in open-pollinated flowers. The controlled condition or non-pollinated flowers produced only 7% fruits, indicating parthenocarpic ability in pointed gourd. The hand-pollinated fruits showed the maximum length, diameter and weight as compared with others. Hand-pollinated fruits were morphologically well-developed than the parthenocarpic fruits. Over and above, the fruit-setting potentiality increased remarkably by hand-pollination than under other conditions.

Objectives:

To find out the fruit-setting potentiality under pollination conditions.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out from March to July 1995 at the IPSA farm, Gazipur. Each male and female plant material used in this experiment was a local popular cultivar having fruit size 10-12 cm long with vervfaint stripe and pale green colour collected from the Department of Crop Botany, IPSA. Vines of male and female plants were preserved in the earthen pots With sandy soil for 15-39 days for sprouting. Sprouted vines were transplanted in 50 pits which were prepared in the experimental plot at a distance of 3m between two adjacent pits. The sex ratio of the transplanted vines were maintained at 1:7 for male: female plants. Pit sizes and rates of manure and fertilizers per pit and intercultural operations were followed as recommended. Irrigation in the pits and prevention of insect pests and diseases of the crop plants through application of pesticides were undertaken as and when necessary. For natural open-pollination, freshly bloomed flowers were tagged and observations were made in respect of fruit-setting. Hand pollination was performed manually be gently touching the stigmas with viable pollen grains from male flowers before stigmas lest their receptivity. In the not pollinated condition, the female flowers were bagged one day before anthesis, The bags were removed after 36 to 48 hours of anthesis. Observation on fruit-setting was recorded 3-4 days after anthesis. In natural, artificial and controlled conditions, a group of two hundred flowers was used for each condition. The operations were repeated for three times. Data were recorded on the number of fruit set in each of pollination conditions. Length,diameter and weight of five randomly selected fruits were measured for each of the above pollination categories. Days taken to reach edible size and ripening of fruits and number of seeds per fruit were recorded in ten randomly selected fruits in all the above three categories.
