Genetic Variability and Correlation Studies in Some Cauliflower Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Eight cultivars of cauliflower were evaluated for some characteristics with regard to genetic variability and correlation pattern in cauliflower. Highly significant differences were observed among the cultivars for all the characters. Cauliflower cv. Kartika and cv. Snowball Y were the earliest and latest in curd maturity respectively. Maximum curd weight was produced by Early Snowball. High coefficient of genetic variation was observed for curd weight and leaf number. Curd weight was positively correlated with all the characters studied.

Objectives:

To determine the magnitude and direction of genotypic and environmental effect and association for a number of characters among cultivars.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Bangladesh Agricultural University Horticulture Farm, Mymensingh during the 1987-88 growing season. Genotypes were chosen primarily to represent commercially grown varieties in the country. Eight genotypes were included, consisting of four cultivars grown locally, one from Japan claimed to be tropical, two from Netherlands and the other represented the old Italian type. Seed were sown in open seedbed on 8 October, 1987 and the seedling were transplanted on 6 November , 1987. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with three replications. There were 15 plant in each plot. Seedling were spaced at 50 x 50 cm with a peripheral guard row. The cropping area was incorporated with fertilizer at 250 kg urea, 150 kg TSP and 175 kg muriate of potash, 15 tons cowdung and 400kg mustard oil cake per hectare. Irrigation was supplied at transplanting and later when necessary. Intercultural operations and insecticide application was carried out according to normal practice.

Since, early maturing cauliflower is highly appreciated in the market, emphasis should be given to breed early maturing cauliflower which can produce compact cure with good depth and no tendency for buttoning. Improvement in the yield of late maturing cauliflower should also be taken into consideration.
