Yield Response of Cauliflower to Different Soil Moisture Regimes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field study on the response of cauliflower to different soil moisture regimes in Grey Terrace soil was conducted at the central BARI farm during the rabi season of 1985-86. Four soil moisture regimes were created by irrigating at 0.70, 0.60, 0.45 and 0.30 bar soil moisture tension. The highest curd yield was obtained with irrigation at 0.45 bar tension followed by irrigation at 0.30 bar. Four irrigations on 11, 25, 37 and 48 days after proper seeding establishment were required to maintain the aforesaid soil moisture regime (0.45 bar).

Objectives:

To ascertain suitable soil moisture condition in order to find the irrigation need for successful production of cauliflower.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Central Farm of BARI during 1985-86. The soil type was Grey Terrace with some physical properties. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four treatments replicated three times. The unit plot size was 6 x 4.5 m with a plant spacing of 60 cm between rows and 45 cm from plant to plant. Thirty days old seedlings of cultivar Early Snow Ball were planted on 17 Nov. 1985 and harvested on and from 10 Feb. 1986. Fertilizer were applied @ N₁₈₀' (P₂O₅)₉₀' (K₂O)₈₀' S₂₀' Zn₅ and Mo₁ Kg/ha as Urea, TSP, MP gypsum, zinc sulphat and ammonium molybdate respectively and cowdung 10 t/ha. One third urea along with all other fertilizers and cowdung were applied in pits 7 days before planting and rest of the urea were applied in two equal splits as side dressing after 30 and 50 days of planting. Four soil moisture regimes were created and maintained by irrigation at 0.70 bar (T₁), o.60 bar (T₂), 0.45 bar (T₃) and 0.30 bar soil moisture tension (T₄). Two tensiometers properly filled with distilled water were installed at the depth of 15 and 30cm in each plot of two replications. Tensiometer readings were recorded every day at 9-00 a.m. Irrigation were given by hose pipe as indicated by the reading of tensiometer installed at 15 cm soil depth to meet up the field capacity level. Michael pointed out that the soil moisture at about 15 cm depth should not be allowed to dry below 70 percent of total available moisture and irrigation should be scheduled by observing soil moisture level and not by observing the crop. Irrigation water was quantified monitoring soil moisture before and after each irrigation to the depth of 100 cm soil profile by gravimetric method. Soil moisture was also determined at the time of planting and harvest to calculate the stored soil moisture utilization by the crop. For proper seedling establishment water was applied by water can for a period of 20 days and the amount of water was recorded.
