Effect of Irrigation and Mulch on Fruit Set and Fruit Drop in Seedless Lemon

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In a field study at the Citrus Research Project of BAU, Mymensingh from February to September 1990, irrigation increased fruit set and reduced fruit drop in seedless lemon. Fruit set increased and fruit drop decreased as the frequency of irrigation increased. The highest percentage of fruit set (29.9%) and the lowest percentage of fruit drop (24.7%) were obtained when the plants were irrigated once a week during the dry period. Fruit set and fruit drop were similar in plants irrigated once a month in presence of waterhyacinth mulch and those irrigated once a week without mulch.

Objectives:

To increase fruit set and reduce fruit drop in seedless lemon by irrigation and waterhyacinth mulch.

Methodology:

Two experiments were conducted at the Citrus Research Project of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh. A randomized complete block design with three replications was used in each experiment.Expt. 1: This experiment was carried out during the period from February to September 1990 on 8 years old seedless lemon. There were five irrigation treatments viz. no irrigation (control), one irrigation per month, two irrigations per month, three irrigations per month and four irrigations per month. Two plants were used for each treatment. Each plant was fertilized with 30kg of cowdung, 250g of oilcake, 200g of triple superphosphate, 150g of muriate of potash and 210g of urea. The citrus plants were irrigated until saturation of the soil occured. Expt.II: The experiment was conducted during the period from February to September 1990 on 8 years old seedlings lemon as in experiment 1. All the plants were mulched with waterhyacinth. The thickness of the mulch was 25cm . There were five irrigation treatments viz. the plants were kept unirrigated i.e control (T₁), irrigated once in four months (T₂), irrigated twice in four months (T3), irrigated thrice in four months (T4) and irrigated four times in four months (T5). Two plants were used for each treatment. Fertilizers were applied as for experiment 2 ????and the plants were irrigated until saturation of the soil occurred. In each experiment, total number of flowers produced of the experiment was counted. The flowers that shed from the plant before harvesting were counted the percentage of fruit set was calculated. After fruit set, the number of fruits that shed from the plant and those remained on the plant until harvest were counted and ????? the plant until harvest were counted and the percentage of fruit drop was determined. Data were analyzed after arcsin transformation and the differences among the treatments were compared following DMRT.

The highest percentage of fruit set (29.9%) and the lowest percentage of fruit drop (24.7%) were obtained when the plants were irrigated once a week during the dry period.
