Experimental Studies on Storage of Paddy in Different Traditional Structures

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Boro, one of the main paddy crops, was stored in two traditional woven bamboo storage structures, berh and dool, with and without polythene lining. During storage, temperature, moisture content, germination capacity and insect infestation in the bins were recorded. The polythene lining of the bins caused little resistance to the flow of heat and slightly less moisture accumulation from the ambient air, but this had no significant effect on germination capacity and insect infestation. The temperature of the grain followed the ambient temperature more closely in dool than in the larger berh.

Objectives:

To determine the experimental studies on storage of paddy in different traditional structures

Methodology:

The berh and dool had capacities of 930 and 370kg and heights of 1.25 and 0.85 m, respec-tively. The bins were placed on a bamboo platform 18cm high inside a flatroofed building, and a woven bamboo cover was placed on the top of the bin. The wall, base and cover of the bins were constructed of oven bamboo splits 2mm thick. Three units of each type were used as replicates. Another set of three units of each was lined with 0.127mm thick polythene and the top was covered, but it was not airtight. The temperature in the berh was measured by a digital thermometer using fixed thermo-couple sensors, suspended from a support resting on the top of the bin at the positions. The temperatures in the dool were measured by a digital thermometer using a probe, which was inserted to 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6m, at 0900, 1200, 1500 and 1800. The ambient temperature and humidity inside the building were measured at the same times. Samples of grain were collected from three positions using sampling spears at intervals of 15 days and the moisture content was measured by drying in an air oven at 130⁰C for 16h. Grain samples were also collected for measurement of germination capacity and insect infestation using 100 grains randomly selected in each case, with four and three replications, respectively. Near the end of the storage period, the vertical section of the bin was divided into 25 rectangular grid points and the temperature at each of these locations was measured by a digital thermometer probe. Grain samples were collected from these locations with a sampling spear and moisture content was measured. Three main crops of paddy (aus, boro and aman) are grown in three seasons in a year. The paddy grain for experimental studies was maincrop boro of variety BR-2 and was collected from the recently harvested produce of the Agricultural Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University. The initial moisture content of the grain was 12.2%.

Achievement/Findings:

There was almost no difference in the temperature of the layers of paddy during storage in berh and dool bins. The temperature changed more slowly in berhs than in dools because of their greater diameter and height. Polythene lining had very little effect on temperature distribution. The serious defect of the structures is that the grain absorbs moisture from the ambient air through the porous walls, bottom and top of the traditional bins and through leakage of the cover of polythene-lined bins. Lowest germination rates and highest insect infestation were recorded in the grain in the top layers of both types of structure. Both types of bin were suitable for storage of seeds of paddy from harvesting to sowing season, but the dool was better than the berh.
