Variability and Association of Yield and Yield Attributes in Pumpkin Land Races

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twenty seven land races of pumpkin used for assessing future selection strategies in parts of the varietal development programmes, revealed existence of variabilities in all the yield attributes. Higher levels of heritability, genetic advance and genotypic coefficient of variations are restricted only to sex ratio (male:female), number of fruits and yield per plant. Path coefficient analysis revealed that number of fruits and fruit weight were the maximal contributors through direct effect and indicated their importance in the selection strategies in pumpkin improvement.

Objectives:

To assess these themes in addition to heritability and genetic advance estimates amongst 27 locally collected pumpkins land races.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Experimental Farm, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur during December 1994 to May 1995. The experimental materials consisted of 27 diverse pumpkin genotypes collected from different parts of the country. Eighteen day old healthy seedlings of 3-4 leaf stage were transplanted in four pits in 4m² plots following randomized complete block design replicated thrice. Before transplanting, manure and fertilizers were applied @ 15 tons cowdung; 150, 125 and 100kg of urea, TSP and MP per hectare, respectively. Full quantities of cowdung and TSP, and one fourth of the urea and MP were applied just before transplanting and the rest of the urea and MP were applied as topdressing in three equal instalments. Data on three randomly selected plants of each replication for days to maturity, fruits per plant, fruit length, fruit diameter, fruit weight, flesh thickness, brix (%), sex ratio (male:female), dry weight of seeds and fruit yield were recorded during crop period and after harvest. Genetic and genotypic coefficients of variations (GCV and PCV%) were calculated. Heritability in broad sense (H%) and genetic advance as percentage of mean (GAMP) were also estimated. Genetic and genotypic correlation coefficients were computed. Path coefficient analysis was followed.

Achievement/Findings:

From the above results it is obvious to conclude that in the future selection programmes of pumpkin due weightage should be given to lower sex ration, number and weight of fruits as they showed higher genetic estimates and proportional contribution towards yield.
