Assessment of Groundwater Resources and Safe Utilization in Different Geo-hydrological Regions-1999

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study has been conducted at BRRI farm, Gazipur since 1979, Rajshahi, and Comilla since 1994, Habigonj and Rangpur since 1996 and Khulna from Jul 1998. Monthly rainfall and groundwater fluctuations from July 1998 to June 1999 recorded. During this period maximum lowering of groundwater were 12.49, 7.34, 4.50 and 7.13 m below ground surface at Gazipur, Rajshahi, Hobigonj and Comilla, respectively in 1998 occurred during February to April. Minimum water table depths were 5.71, 1.30, 0.85 and 1.23 m below the ground surface at Gazipur, Rajshahi, Comilla and Hobigonj, respectively. In Khulna, water table depth was above the surface from July to November. Minimum water table depth occurred in September at all locations except at Habigonj, where it was 1.22 m below the surface in August. In 1999 (Jan-Jun), maximum water table depths were 15.93, 8.04, 5.58, 8.50 and 1.33 m at Gazipur, Rajshahi, Hobigonj, Comilla and Khulna, respectively in April. It is indicated from groundwater table data that the utilization of STW is limited in Gazipur, Rajshahi and Comilla because of lowering groundwater table below the suction limit.
