Benchmark Survey in Rice-wheat Cultivation System:irrigation and Water Management Aspect in Rice-wheat System-1999

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A bench mark survey was conducted through field visit and interview using pre-designed questionnaire by interviewing a total of 240 farmers used DTW and 100 farmers used STW. The survey was conducted in four thanas of Rajshahi district. These are poba, Godagari, Tanore and Mohanpur. The generated survey data were on two major aspects: crops and agronomy and irrigation practices. Recorded irrigation related information indicated discharge of individual deep tubewell and shallow tubewell used by farmer, hp of DTW/STW, operating hour, number of irrigation given, irrigated area in different cropping season and irrigation cost. Fifty DTW of Poba and fifteen DTWs of Godagari and Tanore were surveyed. On the other side thirty STW of Poba and twenty of Mohanpur were also surveyed. The discharge of DTWs and STWs were varied from 35.37 to 56.6 l/s and 14 to 28 l/s, respectively. The average irrigated area of DTW in T.Aman, rabi/boro and aus season were 20, 15.33 and 4.33 ha, respectively. While the STW average irrigated area in T.Aman, rabi/boro and aus season were 1.75, 3.03 and 0.5 ha, respectively. The operating cost was Tk 40-50 per hr for STW and Tk 75 per hr for DTW. It was found that DTW and STW both operated by the farmer in T.Aman, rabi/boro and aus season. Most of DTW and STW followed rotational method of water distribution. Most of the interviewed farmers reported that water management was good in case of DTW as well as STW.
