Benchmark Survey in Rice-wheat Cultivation System:crops and Agronomical Related Information

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A bench mark survey was conducted through field visit and interview using pre-designed questionnaire by interviewing a total of 240 farmers used DTW and 100 farmers used STW. The survey was conducted in four thanas of Rajshahi district. These are poba, Godagari, Tanore and Mohanpur. The generated survey data were on two major aspects: crops and agronomy and irrigation practices. Farmers grew different varieties of rice in aman season at Poba, Godagari, Tanore and Mohanpur area. Varieties are BR11, Sharna, BRRI dhan32, Parija and local, respectively. The average yield of BR11, BRRI dhan32, Sharna, Parija were 4.39, 4.62, 4.30 and 2.77 t/ha, respectively. Farmers reported that wheat, potato and different varieties of rice grown in rabi/boro season in the respective thana. The average yield of wheat, potato were 2.43 and 17.36 t/ha. Farmers also reported that the average yield of IR50, BRRI dhan28, BR16, panchabati and parija were 5.36, 5.71, 6.0, 5.7 and 5.6 t/ha, respectively. Jute and different aus varieties of rice were grown in aus season. Farmers also reported that average yield of IR50, BR26, Purbachi, local rice and jute were 5.31, 5.88, 2.97, 1.84 and 2.27 t/ha respectively. Farmers reported during interview regarding land type and soil texture of the respective thana. It was reported that medium land soil composed of loam to clay loam soil. Where as high and low land soil composed of sandy/sandy loam and clay/sandy loam soil. Farmers also reported that different cropping patterns are practiced in the respective location. Cropping pattern are: T.Aman-wheat-fallow, T.Aman-wheat-jute, T.Aman-Potato-fallow, T.Aman-boro-fallow, T.Aman-pulse-fallow, T.Aman-wheat-green manure and Fallow-boro-fallow, respectively. Most popular cropping pattern at poba, Mohonpur and Tanore DTW/STW areas was T. Aman-wheat-fallow. Most popular cropping pattern at Godagari DTW area was T.Aman-boro-fallow.

Objectives:

To assess the present status of irrigation and water management practices for rice-wheat systems and identify the major constraints to irrigate rice and wheat cultivation in rice-wheat cropping system

Methodology:

A bench mark survey was conducted through field visit and interview using pre-designed questionnaire by interviewing a total of 240 farmers used DTW and 100 farmers used STW. The survey was conducted in four thanas of Rajshahi district. These are poba, Godagari, Tanore and Mohanpur. The generated survey data were on two major aspects: crops and agronomy and irrigation practices. Under the crops and agronomy aspects, records that were taken indicated different crops grown in different cropping season, transplanting date, harvesting date, fertilizer used, yield, land type, soil texture, cropping pattern and insecticide, pesticide used by the farmer.Farmers grew different varieties of rice in aman season at Poba, Godagari, Tanore and Mohanpur area. Varieties are BR11, Sharna, BRRI dhan32, Parija and local, respectively. The transplanting and harvesting period of the above mentioned varieties were 15/6/97 to 10/8/97 and 1/11/97 to 15/12/97, respectively. The weighted mean fertilizer used were 74-26-35-0-0 of NPKZSCD, respectively. The sowing/transplanting period as well as harvesting period of wheat, potato and boro rice were 2/11/97 to 15/12/97, 1/11/97 to 20/12/97, 20/12/98 to 31/1/98 and 3/3/98 to 10/4/98, 7/2/98 to 30/4/98, 2/4/98 to 25/5/98, respectively. The weighted mean fertilizer used for wheat, potato and boro rice were 66-23-32, 173-69-156, 114-33-35 kg/ha of NPK, respectively.The sowing/transplanting period as well as harvesting period of jute and aus rice were 2/4/1998 to 21/4/1998, 10/4/1998 to 14/5/1998 and 2/7/1998 to 25/8/98, 1/8/1998 to 30/8/1998, respectively.Jute and different aus varieties of rice were grown in aus season. The weighted mean fertilizer used of jute and aus rice were 62-24-32 and 29-20-26 kg/ha of NPK, respectively.
