Benchmark Survey in Rice-wheat Cultivation System:constraints for Crop Production and Operation of Pump

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A bench mark survey was conducted through field visit and interview using pre-designed questionnaire by interviewing a total of 240 farmers used DTW and 100 farmers used STW. The survey was conducted in four thanas of Rajshahi district. These are poba, Godagari, Tanore and Mohanpur. The generated survey data were on two major aspects: crops and agronomy and irrigation practices. Also the constraints related to crop production and operation of pump was recorded. Finally farmers were asked for their suggested solutions to overcome these constraints. The major constraints for crop production in the study area were: Input cost is high, less price of crop, unsuitable weather, natural calamities, insufficient irrigation facilities, problem of insect pest and disease, unavailability of irrigation water, low yield of crop and labor crisis for intercultural operation during different stages of crop. bout 90% farmers reported high cost of crop production was due to higher cost of inputs. The major constraints for operating pump in the study area were: disturbance of electricity, less number of field channel, high price of fuel/electricity, less discharge of DTW/STW and less discharge in the month of April/May. All the respondents reported disturbance of electricity is the main problem for operating pumps
