Effect of Fertilizer, Spacing and Seed Tuber Size on Potato Yield

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field experiment was carried out to optimize fertilizer doses, spacing and planting materials for potato. There were four levels of spacing (S₁-15cm, S₂- 20cm, S₃- 25cm S₄- 30cm) and three levels of fertilizers (F₁- control, F₂- 120: 60: 120: 30kg/ha N, P, K, S + 10 t/ha of CD; F₃- 140:90: 140:40 kg/ha of N, P, K, S +15 t/ha CD). Cut tubers having two eyes were sown in S₁-, S₂, S₃_,and whole tuber in S₄_.The average weight of cut tubers were same with that of whole tubers. Significant response was observed due to the effect of fertilizer and spacing and their interaction using whole tuber. The highest significant tuber yield of 23.98 t/ha was obtained in the treatment F₃having the spacing of 30 cm with whole tubers.

Objectives:

To study the performance of potato cv. Cardinal under a set of fertilizer doses, different spacing and tuber sizes.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Central Agricultural Research Station, Joydebpur during 1994-95 in the Grey Terrace Soil of Joydebpur (AEZ-28). A description of some physical and chemical properties of the soils collected from the experimental field. The trial was laid out randomized complete block design with 12 treatment replicated thrice. There were four levels of spacings (S₁- 15cm, S₂- 20cm, S₃- 25cm S₄- 30cm) and three levels of fertilizers (F₁- control, F₂- 120: 60: 120: 30kg/ha N, P, K, S + 10 t/ha of CD; F₃- 140:90: 140:40 kg/ha of N, P, K, S +15 t/ha CD). Cut tubers of cv. Cardinal (seed rate: 2000 kg/ha) having two eyes were sown in S₁-, S₂, S₃_,and whole tuber in S₄_.The whole amount of P, K, S, cowdung and half of N was applied as basal during final and preparation of land, two days before sowing. The remaining N was applied at 30 days after germination. The unit plot size was 3 × 3m. Irrigation and the intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The crops was harvested at full maturity in the last week of March. The yield data were analyzed statistically and the mean differences were tested by Duncan's Multiple Range Test.Particle size distribution was done by hydrometer method; the textural class was ascertained using Marshal's triangular co-ordinates, soil pH with a combined glass calomel electrode K, P, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn were measured by 0.25 N NaHCO₃, 0.01 M EDTA, 0.01N NH₄F with 0.5 superfloc 127 per 10 liters extraction; Ca and Mg by IN KCI extraction; S and B by calcium phosphate extraction.

Achievement/Findings:

From the above study, the planting of potato at 30cm spacing with whole tuber and application of N₁₄₀P₉₀ K₁₄₀ S₃₀ kg/ha along with CD 10 t/ha gave the highest tuber yield in Grey Terrace Soil of Joydebpur (AEZ-28).
