Value Chain Analysis of Processed Poultry Products in Some Selected Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was carried out to find out the existing scenario of poultry and poultry products from producer to processed product value chain marketing system. For this two mega Districts Dhaka and Chittagong were considered to meet up the aforesaid objectives. . Simple statistical tools were applied for analysis of collected data . From surveyed result analysis clearly revealed that for achieving margin of profit considering all production cost (fixed cost, variable cost)along with management activities cost when considering value addition. Analyzed data showed that for farmers cases for meat/kg and eggs/no added more value 10-11% and 12-15% ;for whole seller /aratdar added value 3-4% and 2-3%;for retailers added 6-7% and 7-8% to the consumers keeping net profit margin when marketing.For ensuring available safe and quality food and also consumers demand value chain actors should have come forward to run processed or further processed business. To gear-up processed or further processed poultry products business need to be set up a well-structured market system in replace of wet market.

Objectives:

1. To determine of value addition of processed poultry products (meat and egg) from raw to Marketing, 2. To know the current market situation of value added poultry products, 3. To identify the constraints and prospects of poultry products (meat and egg) marketing, and 4. To formulate policy guideline for poultry products (meat and egg) marketing.

Methodology:

To assess the margin of value addition from small and medium scale broiler and layer farmers products to consumers levels (in terms of raw products to packaged products).Two Districts (Dhaka and Chittagong) were considered to meet up the research objectives. A random survey technique was applied following face to face interview, focus group discussion with the help of pretested questionnaire. During data collection from the respondent each of them were given a brief description about the nature and purpose the study. For necessary cases open question was asked to cross check the information provided by the respondent. A total of 246 respondentfrom each district10 broiler, 10 layer farmers, 10 chain shop, 20 fast food shops, 15chinese restaurants, 20 hotels, 15 wet marketer/buyer, 20 consumers and 3 poultry product processing industries were randomly selectedas respondent for information collection. After collecting the necessary data and information from field survey, those were classified, edited and coded. For analysing the data a combination of tabular and mathematical tools wereused to achieve the objective and to get the meaningful results. Graphical representation and descriptive analysis such as sum, average and percentage were deriving and calculate to present the results for reporting.

Rising income, urbanization increasing exposure to various mass media, changing food habits with preference for fast foods and heavily industrialization and will greatly enhance the demand for fresh or frozen value added products. For boosting production by increasing the domestic consumption of processed products and also for promoting their export need to policy makers, meat producer cum processor, food processor, food technologist etc have to work together to transform this sector into a more dynamic and vibrant enterprise. Though processed market of poultry products does not create its strong position in the market so far, but now-a-day’s few established private companies (CP Bangladesh Ltd, BRAC; Nourish, AftabPoultry Fams Ltd; Paragon Poultry Ltd;Kazi Farm Ltd etc) invest their money to create a sustainable market.
