Improvement of the Water Resources Management for a Sustainable Rice-wheat System in BARInd Area: Study on Irrigation Requirement for Wheat in BARInd Area, Rajshahi-2000

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted at Mohanadakhali, Paba Thana, Rajshahi Barind area in Rabi season to find out the amount of water requirement for optimum yield of wheat. Experiments were carried out with four treatments:T₁=1.2 EV, T₂=1.0EV, T₃=0.7EV and T₄=0.4EV (EV=value of pan evaporation). Treatments were replicated three times. The Gourav variety of wheat was sown on 5.12.1999. The fertilizer rate was 180:140:40;110 kg/ha of urea, TSP, MOP and Gypsum. Irrigation water demand for wheat cultivation was satisfied based on the pan evaporation demand. During each irrigation total volume of water measured by a long throat flume. Rainfall was measured in the experimental site with a rain gauge. Soil moisture was measured before each irrigation. Three IR were used during growing period in all the four treatments. Highest and lowest irrigation water applied 195 mm and 65 mm in case of treatment T₁ and T₄, respectively. Irrigation water was also applied 163 mm and 114 mm for the treatment T₂and T₃_. Highest grain yield (3840 kg/ha) was obtained under treatment T₁ (1.2EV) and lowest grain yield (2250 kg/ha) was recorded under treatment T₄ (0.4EV). Total rainfall was 62 mm during the growing season.
