Improvement of the Water Resources Management for a Sustainable Rice-wheat System in BARInd Area:study on Irrigation Scheduling and Optimum Doze of Fertilizer for Wheat Cultivation in BARInd Area-2000

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted at Mohanadakhali, Paba thana, Rajshahi Barind area in Rabi season to find out irrigation requirement and optimum fertilizer dose for maximum yield. The treatments were: T₁=Irrigation at CRI and maximum tillering stage (20 and 40 DAS) and recommended dose of fertilizer, T₂=Irrigation at 20, 40 and 60 DAS and recommended dose of fertilizer, T₃=Four irrigation at 20, 35, 50, 70 DAS and recommended dose of fertilizer, T₄=five Irrigation at 20, 35, 50, 65 and 80 DAS and recommended dose of fertilizer and T₅=farmers irrigation practices and fertilizer dose. Treatments were replicated three times. The variety was Gourav sown on 5/12/1999. Fertilizer rate was 180-140-40-110 kg/ha of urea, TSP, MOP and gypsum. The farmers fertilizer dose was 150-160-60-30kg/ha of urea, TSP, MOP and gypsum. Maximum water applied 268 mm in treatment T₃ and minimum water applied 125 mm in treatment T₁. Yield was highest (3900 kg/ha) in treatment T₂ with three irrigation and recommended dozes of fertilizer. In this treatment, irrigation was given in three critical stages crown root initiation (CRI), maximum tillering and booting stages. Lowest yield (3100 kg/ha) was obtained in case of treatment T₅. In this treatment, farmers applied irrigation at CRI and booting stage. This indicates that the main reason for national yield of wheat is inadequate soil-water or low level of irrigation. Farmers mostly apply medium to higher dozes of fertilizer but less number of irrigation compared to requirement. The yield at two irrigation is about 33% less than that at 3 irrigation irrespective of fertilizer level. It means that irrigation at three stage of wheat gives more yield than that at two stages.
