Improvement of the Water Resources Management for a Sustainable Rice-wheat System in BARInd Area:study of Tillage Practices and Soil Moisture Monitoring for Recommended and Farmers Practice-2000.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted at Mahanandakhali, Paba thana, Rajshahi Barind area in rabi season to find out the suitable tillage practices for optimum yield of wheat. Experiment was carried out with three treatments. T₁= Land preparation with two plowing (farmers practice), T₂= Land preparation with three plowing and T₃= Land preparation with four plowing. Treatments were replicated three times. The Gourav variety of wheat was sown on 8/12/1999. The fertilizer rate was 180-140-40-110 kg/ha of urea, TSP, MOP and gypsum. Soil moisture was measured before sowing and irrigation at a depth of 0-15 cm and 15-30 cm. during each irrigation total volume of water measured by a long throat flume. Rainfall was measured in the experimental field with a raingauge. Soil moisture status at sowing were ranging from (14.3 to 16.25%), (15.3 to 17.15%) and (16.3 to 18.2%) for treatment T₁, T₂ and T₃. This difference of soil moisture at sowing time for treatment T₁, T₂ and T₃ was due to number of plowing during land preparation. Again soil moisture were ranging from 12.5-14.5%, 14.25-16.5% and 14.25-16.25%, respectively before 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd irrigation for treatment T₃. On the other hand soil moisture were ranging from 14.52-16.25%, 15.56-17.53% and 14.25-17.3%, respectively before 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd irrigation for treatment T₁. Three irrigation were applied in all the three treatment. Maximum irrigation water applied (155 mm) for treatment T₃ and minimum water applied (135 mm) for treatment T₁. Highest yield (3400 kg/ha) was obtained for treatment T₂ and lowest yield 92900 kg/ha) was for treatment T₁.
