Improvement of the Water Resources Management for a Sustainable Rice-wheat System in BARInd Area: Study on Water Utilization Status in Some Selected Agency/ Farmers Managed Dtw/stw of BARInd Area-2000

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted in some selected agency/ farmers managed DTW/STW of Barind area to assess the performance in rabi/boro season.The DTWs were selected Mohanandakhali, Bagsara and Chowbaria. These were managed by BMDA. Three STWs owned by farmer were selected. The research project initiated with the measurement and monitoring of discharge, duration of operation, rainfall, seepage and percolation at field level, evaporation, water adequacy ad water distribution equity. In addition to the above water management, parameters, crop production aspects were investigated through monitoring farmers’ management practices, yield and input use. STWs were owned by individual farmer. The owner of the STW is responsible for all aspects of operation and management. Irrigation cost was Tk.50/hr. The discharge of DTWs was 56.2 lit/sec and STWs were 14-21 lit/sec. The canal network consists of a large number of main, secondary and field channels. The irrigated area of DTWs and STWs were ranging from 15-20 ha and 4-6 ha, respectively. Total pumping hours used for growing season was recorded. Total operation for DTWs was ranging from 500-700 hrs and STWs were ranging from 125-145 hrs, respectively. Water distribution for DTWs was mostly scattered. On the other hand, STWs owner followed rotational system of water distribution. Most of the farmers reported that water management was good in case of DTW as well as STW. Farmer reported that wheat, potato, boro rice, onion, garlic and vegetable grown in rabi/boro season in the study DTWs and STWs. The average yield of wheat, potato, onion and boro rice were 2.61, 17.56, 7.79 and 5.0 t/ha, respectively. The average fertilizer used for wheat, potato, onion and boro rice were 64-40-34 kg/ha, 173-71-156 kg/ha, 35-40-15 kg/ha and 112-42-34 kg/ha, respectively. During the study period the DTWs was operated for 8-10 hrs per day. Irrigated area per DTW can be easily increased by increasing daily operating hrs from 8-10 hrs to 16-20. The irrigated area STW can also be easily increased by increasing daily operating hrs to 6-7 hrs. In case of DTWs rotational system of water distribution was not practically followed. Consequently large volume of water was misused resulting in poor area coverage. For smooth distribution of water canal network should be properly designed and a new surface movable PVC pipe distribution system may be used to increase more irrigated area.

Objectives:

To assess the present status of irrigation and water management practices for rice-wheat systems and identify the major constraints to irrigated rice and wheat cultivation in rice-wheat cropping system
To improve the land and water productivity for sustainable rice-wheat system and improve water use efficiency at crop farm and system level
To develop an improved package of water management practices that includes conveyance, distribution and application method for rice-wheat irrigation.
