Optimum Irrigation Requirement of Wheat for Achieving Maximum Yield at Chuadanga-2000

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at farmers’ field in Chuadanga Sadar Thana of Chuadanga district during rabi season 1999-2000 to determine the optimum number of irrigation requirement for maximum yield, to find out yield difference among the treatments and to determine the total amount of water use for different level of treatments.The treatments were:T₁= No irrigation,T₂=irrigation at CRI (20 DAS),T₃=irrigation at CRI and maximum tillering stage (20 and 40 DAS),T₄=irrigation at CRI, maximum tillering and booting stage (20, 40 and 60 DAS),T₅= Four irrigation at 20, 40, 60 and 70 DAS and T₆=Five irrigation at 20, 40, 60, 70 and 80 DAS. The amount of water applied for each irrigation was measured and the rainfall was recorded for the crop growing season. The experiment in Chuadanga was established at the optimum sowing date of wheat (15 November). The rainfall was about 77 mm for growing season. Mainly the rainfall occurred at the tillering stage of the crop. The highest yield of 3.5 t/ha was obtained from 5 irrigation. The percent yield increased by irrigation of (treatment 5) over rainfed condition was 438. It reveals that there was no benefit of wheat cultivation under rainfed condition at Chuadanga district. However it was found during the survey period none of the farmers was cultivated wheat without irrigation. Therefore, it was concluded that the optimum wheat yield can be achieved with 5 irrigation and 395 mm of water.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at farmers’ field in Chuadanga Sadar Thana of Chuadanga district during rabi season 1999-2000. The soil was sandy loam. The treatments were: T₁= No irrigation,T₂=irrigation at CRI (20 DAS),T₃=irrigation at CRI and maximum tillering stage (20 and 40 DAS), T₄=irrigation at CRI, maximum tillering and booting stage (20, 40 and 60 DAS),T₅= Four irrigation at 20, 40, 60 and 70 DAS and T₆=Five irrigation at 20, 40, 60, 70 and 80 DAS. The amount of water applied for each irrigation was measured and the rainfall was recorded for the crop growing season. Wheat was sown on 15 November. Fertilizer doses were used as 180:140:40:110:4:5 kg/ha of urea, TSP, MP, gypsum, zinc oxide, boric acid. 8 ton per ha cowdung was used.
