Studies on the Performance of Four Radish Cultivars When Harvested at Different Dates

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was undertaken to asses the yield performance and the effect of the date of harvesting on the yield and quality of four radish cultivars. The cultivar Tasaki San Mula-l produced the highest yield which was followed by Minowase Long White and Miyashige Green Neck. Red Bombay gave the lowest yield. Delayed harvest increased the root yield significantly but the root quality was deteriorated. The cultivar Tasaki San Mula-l retained its root quality up to 60 days, while Minowase Long White and Miyashige Green Neck lost their root quality after 50 days. The cultivar Red Bombay gave the highest yield of quality roots on 55 days.

Objectives:

To study the performance of three exotic and one local cultivar of radish.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Citrus and Vegetable Seed Research Centre, BARI, Joydebpur, Dhaka during the period from October to December 1982. There were four cultivars viz. Minowase Long White, Miyashige Green Neck, Red Bombay and Tasaki San Mula- 1. The Minowase Long White and Miyashige Green Neck are hybrid varieties developed by Takii Seed Co, Japan; and the Tasaki San Mula-1 is an open pollinated variety developed and released recently by the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute. Red Bombay is an open pollinated local cultivar. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with five replications. The cuItivars were distributed in the main plot. The size of a unit plot was 1m X 6m. The seeds were sown on 25 October, 1982 at a spacing of 50 cm X 30 cm. Ammonium sulphate, Superphosphate and Potassium sulphate were applied at the rates of 750. 700 and 270 kg per hectare respectively, Half of the Potassium sulphate and ammonium sulphate and the entire quantity of Superphosphate were applied at the time of land preparation, while the remaining fertilizers were applied as top dressing in two equal installments. The first installment was applied 15 days after sowing while the second after 30 days. Harvestings were done at four different dates after 45,50,55 and 60 days of sowing. The data were collected from randomly selected 25 plants.
