Effect of Waterlogging on Yield of Chilli

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Waterlogging treatments were provided for durations of 24, 48 and 72 hours to chili (local variety) at 25, 55 and 75 days after transplanting (DAT) along with normal irrigation and drainage practices. Severe yield reduction was caused due to watcrlogging at 55 DAT (flowering stage) for 72 hours duration. These yield reductions were 82.36% in 1996-97 and 88.14% in 1997-98. Decreased yield was observed to be the highest with the prolonged duration of waterlogging. In the control treatment with normal irrigation (at 10 days interval) and drainage practices produced the highest yields of 5.84 t/ha in 1996-97 and 4.47 t/ha in 1997-98. Fruit length and its diameter were also found to be the largest in the same treatment in both the years. In the control treatment total irrigation water application was 180 mm with an effective rainfall of 118 mm in 1996-97. The corresponding irrigation amount was 190mm with an effective rainfall of 110mm in 1997-98. Waterlogging at any stage was harmful to chili production in Joydebpur area. This was especially true for continuous waterlogging for 72 hours at flowering stage, which was very sensitive to chili cultivation.

Objectives:

To observe the effect of waterlogging at different growth stages of chili and to evaluate its impact on yield.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Central Farm, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, during the rabi seasons of 1996-97 and 1997-98, in a split plot design having three replications. The soil was grey terrace with silty clay loam texture having bulk density of 1.50 g/cc and field capacity of 27.0%. The unit plot size was 3.0 x 1.5m and spacing followed was 30 x 20cm in both the years. Four waterlogging treatments were applied at three different growth stages of chili plants. The treatment consists of 3 growth stages S₁= vegetative stage (20-25 DAT), S₂= flowering stage (50-55 DAT) and S₃= fruiting stage (70-75 DAT). T₁= No waterlogging (irrigation at 10 days intervals), T₂= Waterlogging for 24 hours, T₃= Waterlogging for 48 hours and T₄= Waterlogging for 72 hours In 1996-97, 30 day old seedlings of local variety of chili were transplanted on 25 November 1996 and the fruit was harvested at 10 days interval starting from 85 DAT to 163 DAT (17 February to 5 May 1997). In 1997-98, the seedlings were transplanted on 17 November 1997 and the fruit was harvested at the same time interval starting from 98 DAT to 160 DAT (23 February to 26 April 1998). Fertilizer was applied at the rate of 100, 100, 150 and 10kg of urea, TSP, MP and gypsum per hectare, respectively. The entire quantity of all the fertilizers except urea were applied during the final land preparation. Urea was applied in three equal splits at 20, 50 and 70 days after transplanting. Check basin method was applied to inundate the crop as per the treatments designed. Waterlogging was maintained by constant supply of water for the specified period of time as per the treatments at different growth stages. Soil moisture was monitored before each irrigation to ascertain the quantity of deficit water. In the control treatment, a definite quantity/volume of water was applied using watering can up to the field capacity at 10 days interval after transplanting. Yield and yield contributing parameters viz. fruit length, fruit diameter and fruit yield were recorded. Ten fruits from each treatment were taken for measuring the average values of fruit length and diameter. The recorded data were statistically analyzed and the mean separation was accomplished following DMRT for interpretation of the results.
