Growth, Flowering Behaviour and Fruit Characteristics of Promising Mango Lines

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment on the performance of six primarily selected lines of mango was conducted to investigate their performance and to select suitable mango lines. Among these six lines, NMS-023 flowered earlier, NMS-025 required maximum time of 118.3 days to fruit maturity while the minimum 115.7 days was required by NMS-028. The highest fruit weight 492.3g was produced by NMS-035 and the lowest 260.70g was obtained from NMS-027. Maximum number (136.7) of fruits was found in NMS-003. NMS-035 produced the highest yield (44.1 kg/plant) while NMS-027 was the lowest yielder (3.8 kg plant). The highest pulp weight (316g) was produced by NMS-035 and NMS-027 was the lowest (164.3g) in this respect. The heaviest (77.5g) and the longest (10.2cm) stone were found in NMS-035 while NMS-003 produced the shortest. Organoleptic consideration showed that NMS-035 had the highest average mean score (2.2) while the lowest was in NMS-023 (1.9) out of 3.0. Considering the facts that a line may not have all the desired characteristics, NMS-035 was judged to be the best among the lines studied.

Objectives:

To find out the growth, flowering and fruiting behaviour and physico-chemical characters so as to evaluate the performance of the selected lines.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Mango Research Station, Nawabgonj during 1996-97. A large number of mango lines were exhibited in the 1st and 2nd national mango show during 1986 and 1987. Among the different lines of mango, only 35 lines were selected. Grafts were made by collection of scion shoots from these lines during 1987. These grafts were planted at a spacing of 5 x 5m in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications during 1988. After two years of preliminary evaluation, only six lines were selected for further evaluation. The crop was manured and fertilized as per schedule described. All other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Only NMS-035 was found to be infested to limited extend by black tip and the remaining lines were nearly free from insect pests, during the growth and flowering period. Three trees of each line and 10 mature fruits per tree were randomly selected for collection of data. During data collection age of the plants were 8 years. Data were analyzed and the means were separated by DMRT. Data on growth and organoleptic characters were recorded. A panel of five members has evaluated the pulp colour, sweetness, aroma, texture, juiciness, fibrousness, peeling quality, eye appeal and general quality of the lines based on the score card.

Achievement/Findings:

The study revealed that though NMS-023 was found to be early flowering but the number of fruits per plant as well as yield potentiality were poor. NMS-035 had both the highest fruit weight and production as well as the highest score on organoleptic evaluation. From the present study, it may be concluded that NMS-035 should be the best mango line for commercial cultivation by farmers.
