Morphological and Yield Evaluation of Six Lentil Mutants

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiments were carried out with six promising lentil mutants, viz. N₁I-101, E₅M-229, N₅M-338, N₄M-402, E₁M-617 and E₄M-941 along with two check varieties, Binamasur-3 and BARImasur-4 to assess the superiority of the advanced mutants with respect to their morphological, yield and yield attributes. The seed yield and time of maturity of lentil mutants /variety ranged from 1700-2000 kgha^-1 and 103-106, days respectively. At Magura, the highest yield was produced by the mutants N₁I-101 followed by the mutant E₅M-229. Other mutants produced similar seed yield. On the other hand, at Ishurdi, BARImasur-4 produced the highest yield followed by mutant E₅M-229. Results of the average yield and maturity time of two locations revealed that mutants N₁I-101 and E₅M-229 recorded the highest yield and matured within 105 days followed by BARImasur-4, which required 106 days to mature.

Objectives:

To assess the superiority of the advanced mutants with respect to their morphological, yield and yield attributes.

Methodology:

The experiments were carried out with six promising lentil mutants, viz. N₁I-101, E₅M-229, N₅M-338, N₄M-402, E₁M-617 and E₄M-941 along with two check varieties, Binamasur-3 and BARImasur-4 at Magura and Ishurdi sub-stations of BINA during 2007-08 to assess the superiority of the advanced mutants with respect to their morphological, yield and yield attributes. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with four replications. Unit plot size was 2m x 2m. Line to line distance was 30 cm. Urea, TSP and MP were applied as the source of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium @ 30, 60 and 50 kg/ha, respectively. Proper cultural operations were followed after seedling emergence. Data on physiological, yield and yield attributes were recorded. The data were statistically analyzed and means were compared by DMRT at 5% level.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the eight tested mutants/varieties, the mutant N₁I-101 performed the best over locations with 2 days early maturity than the check cultivar BARI masur-4. The mutant N₁I-101 may be released after few more trials over locations.
