Studies on the Yield Potentials of Some Exotic Onion Under Banglsdesh Environmental Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to investigate morpho-physiological characters, yield attributes and yield in ten exotic and two local onion genotypes viz., AV-15142, AV-17070, AV-21844, AV-21848, J-315, J-368, J-420, JM-315, JM-368, JM-420, BARI piyaj-2 and BARI piyaj-3. Results revealed that high yielding genotypes produced taller plants, higher number of leaves plant^-1, longer and thicker leaves and thicker diameter of pseudostem compared to low yielding ones and also showed higher bulb yield except in J-420. J-420 showed superiority in plant height, leaf number, leaf length and breadth and pseudostem diameter but produced intermediate yield. In contrast, low yielding genotypes produced shorter plants, lesser number of leaves and shorter leaves which resulted lower bulb yield. Similarly, high yield genotypes produced thicker and larger bulb than in low yielding ones which resulted higher bulb yield in onion. The genotypes AV-21844 and AV-21848 showed superiority in respect of yield contributing characters which resulting the highest bulb yield and among these two genotypes, AV-21844 was the best. AV-21844 also showed attractive yellow colour bulb with good keeping quality. In contrast, JM-315 showed the lowest value in case of yield contributing characters which resulted lower bulb yield though J-315 matured earliest (112 DAT) than the others.

Objectives:

To assess the performances of ten exotic onion lines along with two local improved varieties on the basis of morpho-physiological features and yield attributes; and to select better genotypes based on yield performance and other superior characters.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted at the Field Experimental Farm of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during the period from October 2007 to March 2008 to investigate morpho-physiological characters, yield attributes and yield in ten exotic and two local onion genotypes. The genotypes were AV-15142, AV-17070, AV-21844, AV-21848, J-315, J-368, J-420, JM-315, JM-368, JM-420, BARI piyaj-2 and BARI piyaj-3. The last two genotypes (BARI piyaj-2 and BARI piyaj-3) were released varieties recommended for both winter and summer cultivation while next ten genotypes (AV-15142, AV-17070, AV-21844, AV-21848, J-315, J-368, J-420, JM-315, JM-368, JM-420) were exotic lines. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The size of the unit plot was 1.5 m x 1.5 m. Plant to plant and row to row distance were maintained at 10 cm and 30 cm, respectively. The doses of fertilizers were: urea 130, TSP 180, MP 200, and gypsum 150 kg ha^-1 (BARC, 2005). The collected data were analyzed statistically and the means were adjudged by DMRT at 5% level of probability.

Achievement/Findings:

High yielding genotypes have taller plant, higher number of leaves, higher leaf length and breadth, thicker pseudostem, higher chlorophyll content, larger bulb size in onion; and Among the genotypes, AV-21844 and AV-21848 performed good in respect of morphological, yield attributes and yield with being shown the best in AV-21844.
