Evaluation of Some Exotic Tomato Genotypes Based on Morpho-physiological Criteria

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out with five exotic tomato genotypes (CLN 2770A, CLN 2770B, CLN 2770E, CLN 2770G, CLN 2770H, Binatomato-5 and Binatomato-6) along with two local checks with a view to compare morphological characters and yield performance. Results revealed that all the studied parameters had significant differences among the genotypes. The variety Binatomato-6 was the tallest one (100.8 cm) and CLN 2770E was the shortest of all (63.5 cm). The variety Binatomato-6 produced moderate number of fruits/plant with highest fruit yield (1.57 kg/plant and 44.01 t/ha) due to larger fruit size. In contrast, CLN 2770E showed the lowest fruit yield (0.74 kg/plant and 20.72 t/ha) due to production of fewer fruits with smallest size fruits. However, CLN 2770E matured 7-10 days earlier than the varieties. The high yielding varieties took longer days to maturity than the low yielding ones. However, exotic lines were not out yielded over check varieties. Considering yield performance over locations, Binatomato-6 showed the highest fruit yield at both the locations. Therefore, further experimentation is needed to confirmation of the results.

Objectives:

To assess the performances of five exotic lines along with two local varieties on the basis of morphological features and yield attributes.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out with five exotic tomato genotypes (CLN 2770A, CLN 2770B, CLN 2770E, CLN 2770G, CLN 2770H, Binatomato-5 and Binatomato-5) along with two local checks during November 2010 to April 2011 with a view to compare morphological characters and yield performance. The experiment was set up at two locations of BINA farm Magura and Ishurdi. A randomized complete block design with three replications were followed. The unit plot size was 3 m × 4 m. Row to row and plant to plant distances were 50 cm. Urea, triple superphosphate and muriate of potash were applied at the rate of 240, 220 and 250 kg/ha. Appropriate cultural practices were done as and when necessary. Data on morphological, yield and yield attributes were recorded at harvest from 10 randomly selected plants in each plot and fruit yield was taken from the whole plot and converted into kg/ha.

Achievement/Findings:

The exotic line CLN2770E matured earlier with attractive fruit size. This line may be used as future plant breeding program.
