Evaluation of Fine Grain Rice Based on Yield and Aroma

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to assess morpho-physiological, crop maturity, aroma of grain, yield and yield contributing characters of five promising fine grain rice mutants viz., RM 100-1, RM 100-5, RM 100-16, RM 100-24 and RM 150-2 along with the mother variety, Ukunimadhu. Results revealed that the morphological, physiological, biochemical, yield and yield attributes were significantly different among the genotypes except chlorophyll content in flag leaf. The mutant RM 100-24 and RM 100-5 showed superiority in respect of morphophysiological parameters like leaf area, flag leaf area, root volume, chlorophyll and sugar content in leaf and total dry mass. Furthermore, RM 100-24 and RM 100-5 also showed superiority in yield contributing characters over the other four genotypes and it resulted in the higher grain yield (average 3.60 t ha^-1), while Ukunimadhu showed the lowest (3.27 t ha^-1). The mutant lines required shorter days to maturity [range 105-110 days after transplanting (DAT)] than Ukunimadhu (113 DAT) with the lowest being in RM 100-24 and RM 100-5 (105 DAT). The highest aroma score was recorded in RM 100-5 and RM 150-2 and the lowest being in RM 100-1 and Ukunimadhu.

Objectives:

To assess the performance of five promising fine grain rice mutants along with the mother variety, Ukunimadhu on the basis of morpho-physiological and yield attributes; and to select better genotypes in respect of superior grain yield, short duration and aroma.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out with some promising aromatic rice mutants with a view to evaluate their morphophysiological traits, aroma and yield performance. The experiment was conducted at BINA farm, Mymensingh, during the period from July to December 2006. The experiment comprised of six genotypes viz., RM 100-1, RM 100-5, RM 100-16, RM 100-24, RM 150-2 and Ukunimadhu. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with four replications. The size of the unit plot was 2.5 m x 2.0 m. Hill to hill and row to row distances were maintained at 15 cm and 20 cm, respectively. Urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MP) and gypsum were used as sources of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sulphur, respectively. The dose of fertilizers were: urea 86, TSP 65, MP 135 and gypsum 45 kg ha^-1 (BARC, 2005). Total amount of TSP, MP, gypsum and 33% of urea were applied aa basal doses during final land preparation. The remaining 66% urea was top dressed in two equal splits at 18 and 45 days after transplanting. Chlorophyll and total sugar in leaves were determined at 50 DAT. At harvest, yield contributing characters were recorded from 10 plants of each plot. Aroma of rice was detected by olfactory test following the method developed by Nagaraju et al. (1991). The collected data analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

Out of five mutants, RM 100-24 and RM 100-5 showed superiority in respect of yield attributes (number of effective tillers hill^-1, number of grains panicle^-1), biochemical characters (chlorophyll and total sugar), seven days early maturity, higher aroma and grain yield compared to Ukunimadhu which reflected that RM 100-24 and RM 100-5 were selected effectively to be a physiological superior mutants.
